    Preferred Home Defense Ammo

I asked in the ammo and reloading thread and only had one reply, so I thought I would try here. I recently acquired a Mossberg 590A1 8+1 capacity and wanted to get your thoughts on brands and types of ammo. Thanks in advance.

I changed use low recoil 00 buck and 1 0z. slugs. Still does the job and makes it easier for follow-up shots.

If you're actually serious then you need to read this article: http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Sel...N%20AMMUNITION

It's written by Doctor Gary Roberts:
Dr. Roberts is currently on staff at Stanford University Medical Center; this is a large teaching hospital and Level I Trauma center were he performs hospital dentistry and surgery. After completing his residency at Navy Hospital Oakland in 1989 while on active military duty, he studied at the Army Wound Ballistic Research Laboratory at the Letterman Army Institute of Research and became one of the first members of the International Wound Ballistic Association. Since then, he has been tasked with performing military, law enforcement, and privately funded independent wound ballistic testing and analysis. He remains a Navy Reserve officer and has recently served on the Joint Service Wound Ballistic IPT, as well as being a consultant to the Joint FBI-USMC munitions testing program and the TSWG MURG program. He is frequently asked to provide wound ballistic technical assistance to numerous U.S. and allied SOF units and organizations. In addition, he is a technical advisor to the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners, as well as to a variety of Federal, State, and municipal law enforcement agencies.
tl;dr - Federal #1 buckshot is the best self defense round available. It doesn't overpenetrate as much as 00 buck and does 30% more damage.
If you are wondering if you can get a LTC in Riverside County: THE ANSWER IS YES!

Those are my main ammo for home defense too, I also use Freedom Munitions copper plated slugs in case I need to shoot through cover.

I have Fiocchi low recoil 00 buckshot as well for HD, they're loaded with nickle plated shots, pretty nice.

For riot situations, I also keep a box of 3 inch magnum 00 buckshot that comes loaded with 15 pellets each shell. They're the Winchester Super X you can buy from Walmart. They are VERY loud, throws out a lot of lead per shot and is my "go somewhere else" medicine in case rioters think its a good idea to burn and loot my neighborhood.

I recommend keeping a box of these and you should try a couple of shots. They have a lot of recoil and the blast is incredible, but the result is very satisfactory. The shots are buffered and offers pretty tight pattern.

I've shot 12 gauge 2 3/4" birdshot, buckshot and slugs, but what does 3 inch magnum 00 feel like on a Rem 870 or any other pump compared to a 2 and 3/4 slug?

I'm not recoil sensitive but 3 inch mag would make me a little nervous.

If 2 3/4" buck is like getting punched in the shoulder by a 180 pound man, 3" magnum buck is like getting punched in the shoulder by a 230 pound man.

No doubt that Federal #1 buck is great ammo. Availability of this ammo seems to be an issue.

How do you like the Fiocchi buck? I also purchased some Hornady TAP 00 buck, but haven't gotten around to testing it yet.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

This...with Flight Control Wad. It comes in 8 pellet or 9 pellet in either full or reduced recoil. The 9 pellet rounds are ever so slightly longer than the 8 pellet shells and may affect capacity in your gun. Both are fantastic rounds and this is a really good price on it. Target Sport will usually ship for free too if you buy a case.

I have no idea as both my wife's and my shotguns are semi-autos. On our shotguns, shooting the 3 inch magnum felt like the shotgun is shoved back into your shoulder with authority. You need to get your gun mount correct and have a good cheek weld, and if you do, it is not too bad on the semi-auto.

If you're comfortable shooting full powered 00 buckshots, I don't think it'll be too bad with the 3 inch magnums.

I don't use it for plinking but I shoot it once a while just to get a feel for it in case I do need to use them. I think for riot situations they are excellent as they are extremely intimidating; the very loud blast and 15 super sonic pellets going downrange means even the most determined looters won't want to chance it.
