My 11 year old son wants a shotgun.... what's a good gauge to start with? I was thinking of 410? I personally do not know much about shotgun but now eager to learn? Any recommendation on brand/model, an inexpensive model preferable.

If you want longevity, I'd go for the Remington 870. With his age, it would be preferable to get him a 20 gauge youth model. It's a good beginner's gun and is very reliable. Also, it's very easy to clean, maintain and accessorize. The gun is the most popular shotgun out there.
But when he gets older, he should and probably would want to have a 12 gauge. I'm not sure if the youth model has the same receiver as the adult model. If so, then he can just change the stock and barrel when he's older instead of buying a completely new shotgun.

+1 20 ga 870 youth.
I dunno, I've never been much for guns. I mean, sure, we have the usual gun by the door, another near the TV, one in the kitchen, and another in the bedroom...and several others laying around. For the most part though, we keep our home free of guns. We are peace loving folks.Comment

Also, when my kids get a bit older (they're 3 and 1 1/2yrs old now), I'm going to start them out with a cheap Over/Under. I recently bought a Stoeger O/U that comes with both a 20ga and 12ga set of barrels. Simple to shoot, good for clay, and dad can have fun with it too.
870 would be first choice, but wanted to throw another option out there...I like to kill stuff and eat it.Comment

Buy your son somthing he will keep the rest of his life, even if he shoots another gun down the line.....I was 12, my first stotgun was a Browning Sweet 16...shot it for years and still shoot it from time to time.....It's worth 7-10 times what dad paid for it in 38 year used condition.
Quility low production guns will be worth the cost down the line.Comment

You absolutely will not go wrong with the Remington 870 youth model 20ga and this weekend should be a pretty good time to buy. I know bass Pro Shops had them advertised for $239 after rebate.Comment
