    Attention Mossberg 930SPX Owners

I have been contemplating installing a sidesaddle on my 930 SPX. However, I am afraid of certain potential situations.

The two brands I have been considering are GG&G and Mesa Tactical. I spoke with a representative from both companies today.

Mesa Tactical was honest and said they had problems with their 930SPX sidesaddle in the beginning. They rectified that by changing the diameter of the “Chicago screws.” They also give additional “Chicago screws” in case you break them at installation. They said “Chicago screws” do not allow the action to get pinched and become inoperative.

I then called GG&G. They said many people at the Shot Show told GG&G that Mesa Tactical sidesaddle shell retention loses its retention after six month and the ammo falls out of the Mesa sidesaddle. GG&G also said the retention of their sidesaddle is more durable, but a little more difficult to insert or retract the shells. They said leaving the shells in their sidesaddle a few days might help the issue. The retention in their sidesaddle is also replaceable, a plus. However, they do not utilize “Chicago screws.” They also said if you tighten their sidesaddle too much, the shotgun might malfunction.

I really do not care for that elastic crap you mount on a butt stock that holds a few shells. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Go with the velcro shotgun cards. I took a 4-day class with mine and never had an issue with them coming off or moving around. It worked out well. Its an easy way to carry extra ammo and swap the type of round you need.

    These guys have them. http://www.originalsoegear.com/produ...a-shotgun-card

        StrongPoint,

I have a few questions for you.

        1) While the Sureshell carrier is loaded, have you witnessed the sidesaddle screws damage the pin holes it attaches to, due the recoil blast?

        2) I was told you have to remove the sidesaddle every-time you clean the shotgun, then once again install Loctite?

        3) Is it difficult to remove Loctite screws every-time you clean your shotgun?

        4) Has your Mesa saddle ever made your shotgun malfunction.

        5) How long does the shell retention last?

        6) You stated there's Santoprene inserts you can install after the saddle loses its retention? Where do you purchase those items?

        Thanks,
        FF

          Ramathorn,

I will look into that in a few minutes. I intend on taking my shotgun to FrontSight too!

Do your shell holders have the fluffy stuff on the backside (loop or hook)? How did you attach them to your shotgun? Can you take a picture of your SPX with one of those shell carriers loaded, attached to your shotgun, and post the picture here?

          Thanks,
          FF

Industrial velcro with adhesive backing - I bought mine at Home Depot -- http://www.homedepot.com/p/VELCRO-br...0593/202261931

Trim it to miss the trigger-group takedown pin. Mount the 'loop' to the gun, the shell cards have the 'hook' part. Clean the receiver for oil and grease; let the mounted tape cure for 24 hours or longer.

I bought the ESSTAC shotgun cards from SKD.

I had trouble with the Chicago screws for sure. Caused cycling issues.
I'm actually glad because this is a far better solution for me.

Librarian, I clicked on the link and read the reviews. Is there some type of glue that comes with the kit(a little confused with the reviews), or does the product already have an adhesive with some type of protectant peel off tape? Is there much play with the shell holders when velcroed to the shotgun? How long does this product stay glued to the receiver before having to install a new piece? Mount the loop to the gun?

                I appreciate the info.

Cess, that looks sweet. Did you do what the posters above described? How is that working out for you?

Indeed I used industrial strength stuff from Home Depot and so far so good.
Exposure to cleaning solvents haven't harmed it yet.
I'm sure it will give some sign of warning when/if it's time to remove and replace it with fresh stuff. Basically every time you rip a card off it your checking it.

That velcro product has its own adhesive on each half; clear peel-off covering, apply velcro to the gun, don't plan on moving it again!

Velcro is generically 'hook and loop', the hooks catching the loops. On the gun needs to be the 'loop' half, both because the shell cards have the 'hook' half, and because the loop part is soft instead of scratchy - and won't grab the inside of your case, your shirt, your hair, ...

Haven't had it long enough to guess when the adhesive might fail, but it's immune to the heat of firing a hundred or so in 2 hours. And I have more velcro in the package

                        Cess & Librarian,

I noticed both of you gave me different brands of shell holders. I just returned from Home Depot and found this type of fastner. Before I buy the 20 feet rolls I decided to purchase these little samples to test. Will this product work with the material that's on your shell holders?

An extremely clean surface is critical to getting the Velcro to stick. Last cleaner should be isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag.

I don't think so, the cards are meant to use with the fuzzy mating surface of normal velcro. You don't want too strong a grabbing surface, you want to be able to rip it off without great effort.

OP: Are you talking about their rail mount carrier? I was wondering about those.

I also like those Velcro carriers. Very interesting.
