    Good semi-auto shotgun

Im looking into getting a semi automatic shotgun and was looking at the benelli m4. Does anyone have any experience with it or have their own recommendations?

The Benelli M4 is the only semi auto that I have personally seen make it through multi day firearms classes. Other semi autos seem not to be as reliable. If I were looking for a defensive semi auto shotgun, the Benelli M4 would be the only one I would get. It does need to be cleaned after about two days of hard use.

The Beretta 1301 is a great new alternative to the Benelli M4 at nearly half the price.

My take on the Benelli is that it is the best shotgun there is, and it will turn an average to below average shooter into a pretty good one.

In the Frontsight class I went to, there were 3 distinguished graduate, and 2 of them were M4. The other guy could have DG'd with a slingshot. He was that good.

At the Gunsite shotgun class I easily won all of the skills competitions and then several other guys wanted to try my M4. The all did better, and some beat my times. For an example, I did the Dozer drill, which is 5 steel knockdown targets in 1.89 seconds. No other gun could come within a half a second of that.

If money is not a concern, buy it and never feel bad.

The M4's a great gun. Personally, if I were going with a Benelli, I'd get an M2 since it's lighter, faster to swing around and shoot with a vent rib fiber optic and has more aftermarket support. Good luck!

Keep in mind the Benelli M4 is recoil operated. If you take a advanced tactical class with one handed shooting drills, it likely won't cycle. Same with non-shouldered drills. Same with shooting with the buttstock against a solid object (like a wall). It won't cycle under all those conditions. A gas operated system will cycle under all those scenarios. Something like a FN SLP MKII is also very very fast cycling. Another excellent choice would also be the Remington VersaMax Tactical. A recoil operated shotgun like the M4 will also kick more than a gas operated shotgun.

Edit: Please read post #23 regarding my correction of the M4 being gas vs recoil operated.

beretta or benelli. Duck hunters I talk to say "the three b's - beretta, benelli and browning." I prefer Berettas - softer shooting. I don't see a lot of Brownings in the field.
