FN Herstal SLP

Hey, so I've got an FN SLP...and I was always curious about this. They don't give you any info in the manual to explain what chokes are ideal or best suited for what type of ammo.

I think it came with 2 or 3 chokes including the one that's in the barrel from the factory and 1 extra gas valve / regulator. I understand the function of the latter, pretty straight forward loads below 1.5 oz get one valve, loads above 1.5 oz get the other valve. But the choke tubes they don't really discuss. The only shotgun I had before this was my Remington 870 which is a HD model and doesn't offer any choke tubes, I think the barrel is profiled, "cylinder".

The FN comes with IIRC, "cylinder" and "improved cylinder". Which one is appropriate for what? I'm guessing for slugs, "cylinder" since that's why my 870 has and it has no issues with slugs. Is, "improved cylinder" ok to shoot slugs thru or is it more geared towards buckshot?

I think everyone paid the same price; $650.

LOL I freakin wish, I dunno where you're getting them for $650 cause that's a fantastic price. I paid about $860 from Impact if I remember correctly. Bought it I dunno least a year ago now...maybe longer.

I would love to know where you got that deal at.
As for chokes Dont use anaything tighter than modifyed for slugs or buck even that is pushing it. IC is the safest.

re: what choke to use

If you are using a rifled slug I can't see any choke beyond cylinder being a good thing. These are specs for winchester chokes but I would imagine are pretty close to what shipped with your gun.

Cylinder .000 in 25 - 35%
Skeet #1 no data - 33%
Improved Cylinder .005 in 35 - 45%
Skeet #2 .007 in 50%
Modified .012 in 45 - 55%
Improved Modified . 022 in 55 - 65%
