Boy Scout Shooting Merit Badges!!

If you, or someone you know has connections to a Boy Scout troop, the SoCal Shotgun/Skeet Clinics is an outrageously fun activity for Scouts and their parents alike...

and I am pretty sure they would get most of what they need to get their shooting merit badge!

That's a win-win, and is a very fun way for young men to gain an understanding and respect for firearms that benefits us all in the end.

This is a great idea and not to be a wet blanket but are you or any of the other instructors a currently certified NRA instructor or RSO? I would hate to have the kids come out and not meet the requirements for the merit badge. Rifle merit badge was my favorite.

From BSAs website:

Shotgun Shooting. The merit badge counselor is responsible for ensuring that all instruction or other activities involving any handling of firearms or live ammunition is consistent with state and federal law and supervised by a certified NCS shooting sports director or NRA Shotgun Instructor or Coach. Instruction or other activities involving handling muzzle-loading shotguns must be supervised by an NCS shooting sports director or NRA/NMLRA certified muzzle-loading shotgun instructor. Shooting must be supervised by an NRA-certified Range Safety Officer. If instruction and shooting are to occur at the same time, both the RSO and qualified instructor must be present. They may not be the same person. Note that commercial shooting ranges may provide RSOs. See the Guide to Safe Scouting and the BSA National Shooting Sports Manual, No. 30931, for further details on shooting sports.

Are any of the Instructors BSA approved merit badge counselors?

That would be the best selling point to the Troops.

The shooting requirement Option A, item k requires a 48% score each of two rounds of 25 shots. The skeet field location is on Station 7, low house.

IDK but I would have never been able to do that. Without the fundamentals of actual shooting I would say 25% is more likely. This is where the clinic would shine.

Additionally while the clinic is actually not a BSA sanctioned activity, all safety protocol are observed. And proper firearms are available either at the Proshop for rental, or may be borrowed at the time of the clinic from one of the instructors at no charge. Advance notice should be given to the clinic coordinator(Trapperjohn) with attendees name, age, and gender. and shooter will be checked for fit(part of the clinic and reason for showing up at 7:45am. Notes should be taken of the fit for later usage.

It would be my suggestion that a parent also sign up with the scout for a real eye opener of an experience. This would be a fantastic chance to do an activity together. At the end of the clinic, ask Don Ziegler if he has any of his books with him for sale. Last time I checked the book was $20, and has all of the key points taught in the clinic.
