    pig hunt

Does anybody here go pig hunting with a shotgun? I'd like to go and to learn. I have a Mossberg 500, I would use Brenneke Black Magic 3"s or Brenneke Heavy Field Short Magnums, 2 3/4".

I was hiking at Lake Sonoma, west of Healdsburg, a few weeks ago, and they have a problem with feral pigs there. The signs indicated that shotguns with slugs are the favored tool for eradication, but only in February. It's a beautiful spot, no doubt. Here's the DFG page on pig hunting in general, have fun:

I have taken several hogs with a 12ga slug.

One was a 130lb sow at about 65 yards, I hit her right between the shoulders from downward angle (I was on a steep hill looking down at her in the bottom of the gully) she dropped in her tracks. Another, just recently was a 165-175lb boar at about 45yds. My brother shot it right behind the shoulder, it ran about 15 yards and went down.

I would suggest rifle sights and keep the distance below 75 yards if using a smooth bore barrel. Good sights and a rifled barrel you should be able to reach out to 125yds give or take.

I'm a beginner at hunting, although I shoot consistently well at the range. I have a Truglo 4x32 shotgun scope, if that helps... I'd like to learn, and I can easily have a good time outdoors even if I don't shoot anything. What methods do you guys use for pig hunting? Do you process the meat yourselves?

My only kill for pig is with a .30-06, and I did process the pig myself. Butchering it wasnt too bad, if you can handle field dressing it.

No, field dressing is not a problem for me. Anybody wants to share some info on his pig-hunting method?

That sounds like a hoot, though I don't think there would be much pig hunting in Socal? I'd love to try that out sometime though.

reading the DFG document, its crossbow, bow and shotgun with slug only in February.
