    AOW question

Hello, I was talking to a friend recently who told me that replacing a stock with JUST a pistol grip (aka no stock) automatically makes a shotgun into an AOW if it was manufactured and sold with a stock. Is this true?

Obsolutely not true. An AOW can never have had a shoulder stock installed.

Your friend is incorrect, to put it mildly.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

Thank you guys. I asked because I have a Mav 88 that I put a Shockwave Raptor grip on for goofing off at the range and he was dead serious telling me that I was violating several laws.

I keep the shotgun flowchart with my Mav 88 and as I followed it I had always been certain that I was in the right but my legalese isn't very good so I just wanted to be sure.

Also note that if the overall length of the shotgun with only the pistol grip is less than 26 inches, you have a short barrel shotgun (regardless of the actual barrel length), and a felony to possess.

Please refer to Penal Code sections 17180 and 33215.

Yep. Its a 20" barrel and the lower (sorry if thats the wrong term lol) brings it over 26" Then the raptor grip adds another 3 or 4"

"Goofing off" at a range with a pistol grip shotgun sounds dangerous. I've seen too many people at ranges who think they're Rambo to want to spend any more time in that kind of environment.

                    he is confused

pistol grip shotguns become similar to the "other firearm" definition but if it ever had a stock it will remain a shotgun

the confusion is the similar terms

"other firearm" which includes firearms which are not handguns not rifles and not shotguns examples are firearms that never came with buttstocks that have rifled barrels over 16 inches or smoothbore barels over 18 inches and an overall length of 26 or greater or bare frames and receivers since they could be constructed into handguns, rifles, shotguns,or the above midway item

vs "any other item" which are concealable versions of the first definition of the "other" but not built from a rifle or a shotgun

but these are just my understandings i'm not a lawyer and all my expressed opinions are for entertainment purposes only no warranty expressed or implied

I know what you mean and thats actually why I stopped going to BLM even though the most popular BLM spot in Riverside county is only 10 minutes from me. The shockwave raptor grip is unlike any other pistol grip Ive ever used. I had a Knoxx breachersgrip that is supposed to reduce felt recoil by 60% or something like that. Still kicked like a mule.

With my raptor grip I can shoot slugs without worrying about breaking my wrist. I think just the way the grip sits in your hand is the reason. Instead of the kick being directed at your palm its directed down and away a little. Dont get me wrong, the stronger loads still kick and my hand/arm gets pushed back a few inches with each shot but its still much more controllable and comfortable to me than any other pistol grip.

Its not the most practical thing in the world but I threw it on an old Mav 88 to goof off with at my members only range, which I generally only visit on weekday evenings when I have the place to myself or my group.

I can't fault you for wanting to avoid somebody shooting a less than safe gun, but even with a more conventional firearm, all it takes is a few seconds for an idiot to have a ND.

Shooting guns "sounds dangerous" so you should avoid that as well.

As long as the person keeps it pointed down range then who cares what toy they use or how they blow through their ammo money?
