Thanks for the input and help everyone. The guy I bought it from said it was the 12 gauge. He swears he has the barrel somewhere but needs time to find it.
Sounds like my $35 investment will pay off

No it is a retired police shotgun. The remnants of yellow are paint and tape were applied to designate it as a "less lethal" shotgun.

they're not making great old shotguns anymore. it would be a shame to part the Ithaca out.

Keep it, fix it, shoot it. I just got an older M 37 (1949 vintage) and it is a lot of fun.

                Negative. See Ithaca trench gun
Note heat shield and no checkering. A flaming-bomb ordnance inspection mark will be on the stock.

There are also Ithaca's shipped to the government with standard stamped engraving and a parked finish...I know as I have one...U.S. ordnance bomb is not present, nor are any other markings to indicate it was originally a military weapon.

I called Ithaca with the s/n, a sweet lady advised me the weapon was from a batch shipped to the Baltimore (iirc) Navy Yard in the early 1940's. It has a checkered buttstock, a beautiful parked finish that's gone toward green with age, corncob forend, normal pressed engraving, and a 20" barrel. $200 at a gun show a few years ago...I obviously reverse-gouged the seller.

Keep it and fix it up. They are great HD and bird guns. The bottom one has been knocking down aerial targets (clay and feathered) for 4 generations in my family.

Keep an eye on ebay for parts also. I have found it to be cheaper for gun parts in a lot of instances over Gunbroker.com. Worth watching both sites. Lots of model 37 barrel have been sold on ebay in the last few months $75+/- range, some in the $50-$60 range. Depends on the type of barrel you are looking for. There does not appear to be any great deals at this time though. Fun project, nice score.
