    1967 remington 870

Hey guys I have a question about my shotgun I inherited from my father it's a 870 wingmaster I believe a 1967. My father passed so I don't have the exact details on it but was curious if anyone had knowledge as to the fact I have heard that 20 gauges such as mine around those years are built with 12 gauge pieces or frames so to speak. I'm looking into finding parts such as magazine extensions and a barrel but want to brush up on some knowledge before doing so. Any information would be much appreciated Thanks for your time.

Old 870s are slicker than snot on a brass door knob.

    Sorry about your Dad.

IIRC it is the 16 ga that was built on the 12 ga reciever. The 20 ga recievers were smaller.

I has read something about the "x" suffix in the serial number means it's a 12 gauge receiver and mine does end with the x but wetter or not that information is valid is what I am worried about. I believe it is a standard weight 20g

Yes, it is on a 12ga receiver and there are no barrels made for it. You can join hundreds of others looking for barrels for that model and may find one.

Thanks aippi, I think I'll have it taken to a gun smith to cut the barrel length down. I don't plan on hunting with it but keeping it by my bed for home defense.

That would be tragic. Are you sure about cutting it? That would be irreversible.

                  What condition is it in?

OH OH OH. Don't cut it.

If it in good shape leave it alone.

Get a new HD shotgun instead, leave the old gal alone!

I lost my Dad about a month ago after a very long life. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

                        Recall is not correct.

20's with an X or N in the s/n are built on 12ga frames.

                        20's with a K or U in the s/n are built on 20ga frames.

                        I would not say "crazy"...

I picked up a safe full of my Dad's guns and took them the hell out of California. Some go back to the 1940's.

Do what you will, but personally you can pick up a cheapo HD shotgun just about any place. Better yet...find a shorter 20ga barrel to fit you frame...they're relatively common on the web.

You have what's called a Standard Weight Frame, made in 12,16, and 20Ga pre-77?
Barrels can be found, but pricey when you do.

Personally, I wouldn't cut down what amounts to an heirloom. Special purpose defense shotguns are simply too readily available and/or an "extra" sacificial part can be obtained.

There'd be some value loss for sure, but if it's never for sale, value is a pretty weak argument. Lord knows there's been plenty of Model 12's and 870's cut down over the years. I almost bought myself a beautifully restored Parker with cut down barrels for $500. Would have been mine for sure if I was into the cowboy action stuff. But with factory length barrels the shotgun would have been worth several times more $'s.
