    Shotgun damage

So on my second outing with my winchester sxp, it suffered a big jam and when I was taking the barrel off to unjam it I noticed this

as u can see a small chunk of the receiver sheared off on the corner. The piece looks like it is to help the barrel align somewhat. Is this a big deal or I shouldn't worry about it?

If it's new, I'd send it back...

To be honest, from the picture anyways, it just looks like the barrel came loose and the finish got marred. Are you saying that significant aluminum has been sheared off?

is the mag tube nut screwed tightly enough to lock the barrel in?

I would say about 1mm worth of metal was sheared off, the weird thing is, the barrel where it touches has nearly no damage just a light blemish

Are you sure it wasn't always like that? Could have been from when the FFL orginally assembled it. I would clean it up with a file, black it out and get back to shooting. Then again it is hard to tell how bad it is from the angle of the pics so far.

Is that the only thing indexing the barrel - those little shelves on either side?

Steel vs. aluminum, I wouldn't expect the steel to show much damage.

If it's a new gun, I would not take a file to it, it may void the warranty. If this a new gun, not a used one, I would send it back...

I will take a better pic tomorrow as it is dark now, but I also do plan on contacting winchester tomorrow, I didnt get a chance today as I didn't bring the gun serial# with me to work

The damage is almost a triangle shape with the deepest part near the front, and they aren't the only thing to index the barrel but they are what I can tell a final piece to the barrel alignment. The barrel now rotate almost a pinky nail thickness with the locking nut fully tighten down

The barrel should be locked in tight, no movement in any direction. Barrel movement in any direction is not good. Contact Winchester, this sould not happen.

Is it possible to insert the barrel incorrectly in that shotgun?

no, as there is the ring that fits over the ammo tube, and this

as you can see, the small ridge on the barrel on each side that sits on top where the damage is.

it is hardened steel (barrel) on an aluminum (receiver). Probably the coating on the barrel is more durable too.

                        There is a recall

Not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but fyi.

grakken - that recall doesn't apply to me. I have the 3" version.

I had called winchester and they sent me a pre-paid label to ship it back to them.

so now it will be a waiting game once the shotgun arrives to their doorstep and if they will fix it or try to blame it on me.

I doubt they will blame you. Most firearms companies are very good about taking care of their customers.
