    Carlson Rifled Choke

Well....I can hear a few chuckles already....oh well.......I sold a Baikal 220 20 gauge that would give 2 moa with Federal truball 23/4 slugs IC. .....and that was at 50 and 100 yds.

So...not being satisfied with the volume held in ready in a sxs and not wanting to adjust in the scope for the different barrels POI....I traded in on a Mossberg 505 petite 20 gauge. Well........I've tried a number of different slugs and it is 4 moa at best at 50.......forget 100. So.......I got tempted to make this smooth bore perform....I've ordered a short rifled choke and a bunch of different slugs (rifled and sabot) and will be going to the range next week to find out if I'm a fool or fiend.

What experience have you all had with rifled chokes in smooth bore?

    I'll answer my own question.....

So...I imagine not to many folks on the board use a rifled choke. So....I gathered a few samples of different rifled and sabot slugs and started blasting away today with my new rifled choke.

So the results...........2" group with standard Federal Power Shok slugs was my best group at 50 yds. I also had the same result with 4 out 5 shots with Brenneke Magnum 3".This was followed by 2.5" group with Brenneke KO's and Brenneke short heavy and a 3" group with Winchester inexpensive 20 gauge slugs. Federal Truball 2 3/4 also produced a 4 " result. All the above were 5 shot groups. Herter's gave a 5" group, Remington slugger was abysmal and HV slugger were 6". Truball 3" gave a 5" group.

With Sabots......I got a 5 inch group with Hornady sst, a 6" group with Winchester Dual. These both went sideways (keyholed) through the paper. I did get a 4" group with Lightfieds and they did not keyhole.

So......there you have it.......of course what is lacking in this review is the use of all of the above slugs with an IC choke for comparison....TOO EXPENSIVE!

I have a question, do you have a fear of comas?

Yes, one of my biggest fears is to be in a vegetative state for the rest of my life.

Back to the original question: I've tried a rifled Remchoke in my 1187 and the Barnes lead free 12 gauge slugs tumbled at 25 yards. They wouldn't hold 10 inches for three slugs at that distance. I was testing them for a hog hunt in a lead free, shotgun/muzzle loader only, restricted area.

You can also try one of those really cool steel slugs from DDupleks, Hexolit 32 for example:

It seems to combine both the properties of armor piercing and expanding ammo.

Carlson rifled chokes in smooth bore

To answer your original question, I put a Carlson's rifled choke tube in my Benelli M2 for an Iowa whitetail hunt a couple of years ago. Tried a couple of different brands of slugs and settled on the 2 3/4" Brenneke K.O. Used Truglo add-on sights. Got good accuracy out to about 125 - 150 yards. Killed a buck at approx. 117 yards with one shot through the heart/lungs. Needless to say, I was pretty happy with the results and at a lower price than buying a rifled barrel that I might never use again.

photo of Mossberg 505 with Carlson rifled choke

photo of shotgun with Carlson rifled choke tube extending out beyond muzzle

I'll be going back to attempt 100 yds with both the Federal power shok which was the tightest group at 50....and I'm going to try the Latvian Dupleks20 which are made of steel.

I've used the 1oz DDupleks HexoLite 28 (12ga) and passed clean through a creosote railroad tie. I don't have anything else to compare it to, but I was duly impressed
