I have a marine magnum in the collection, but I wanted a sporting length barrel so I could use it at the range. Initially, thinking I could save a buck, had spare a 30" barrel plated but it was a lot shinier than the Remington Nickel job and just didn't have the same hue in the nickel plate...so what to do?- lets just get another 870 plated to match! Luckily I had my 1979 vintage wingmaster police model to try it out on.
This 870 had seen a lot of use and even the stock had been replaced (I shot it so much it cracked). The bluing was still good, but I have a few other pristine 30 year old 870's in the safe so why not?
the SG I had plated is the one on top. This picture is 10 years old- I busted the stock and used it a lot- it didn't look this nice when I had it refinished.
Sent it to Robar in Phoenix. They did the small parts too- I elected not to mess with the trigger group and kept it unplated.
My friend had late model Rem 870HD furniture so I got that for free:

the original 18" police model barrel (also plated).
Is it cheaper to make your own marine magnum vs. buying one from remington? I do not believe so- you would need stainless parts in the trigger group and a stainless magazine spring, the cost of the shotgun, and then about $300 to have the plating service done. I have about $625 into this gun (including purchase price), but I bought it so long ago when you could buy used wingmasters for about $300. The extra barrel was $110 on ebay years ago too-I didn't add that cost, nor the extra cost to plate it. The once buttery smooth action is now kind of tight feeling and will need break in. The stock screw was a tight fit from the build up of the electroless nickel plate on the threads. Everything else fit fine as the plated layer is quite thin. I haven't been able to scratch it yet- it seems real durable- time will tell, but I think it looks great.
