New Remington 870 Express GTG?

Hello,

I'm in the market for a new shotgun and I like the styling and price point of the 870 wooden express shotguns. But, I've heard about people having issues with post-2007 Freedom Group 870's.

My question: Have the issues been sorted out? Are they GTG out of the box?

Still have rough chambers and extraction issues to this day.

The chamber can be improved by polishing chamber with 000 steel wool.

mine doesn't like winchester bulk packs from Walmart. but have had no issues with the federal bulk stuff

No issues for me. Yes I have had to mortar it with cheap bulk ammo, but I've done that with several shotguns. Early 80's 500's, 930, wing masters/express mags. It's the ammo not the gun.

Usually with winchester Walmart bulk. Other than the ammo issue my 870's have been flawless and no different than any other guns Ive owned.

Quality is suffering.

Bought a new 870 express and one of the shell latches popped out. Said it needs to be restaked.

The front post bead sight is also canted.

I've played with exactly one example of both (pre Freedom group and post Freedom group), so my sample size is limited.

That being said, the pre has been solid. The post suffered from a lack of QC, or looser tolerances in QC such that I have fixed a number of things. Mainly, the finishing on the machine work is, IMO, subpar (sharp edges, burrs, etc.) and in my case the trigger group had to be replaced.

I'm sure at some point aippi will step in to remind us that all of the parts for all of the 870s (wingmaster, police, express, etc.) come off of the same production line. Likewise I'm sure he'll remind us that people who have extraction issues with cheap bulk ammo likely did not clean their chamber before shooting, and as such have caused their own extraction problems. I'm sure he'll also tell us that all of his shotguns run any bulk pack ammo without a single hiccup. He may also remind us that he is a certified armorer that builds these guns professionally and as such, has the knowledge, tools, and time to ensure they work well.

From my one data point of experience I would say it is wise to disassemble, deburr, dehorn, clean, and polish the chamber before use.

I'm sure aippi would, at the very least, urge you to clean the chamber before firing which may eliminate any possibility of 'sticky chamber'.

My first shotgun 13 years ago next month was an 870 express, I called her jamy jams. Sold her to a buddy real cheap, REAL CHEAP.. Bought my 500 two weeks later. Same 500 is sitting in my safe waiting for me. Oh and trust me, I've shot it here and there..

As others have posted don't shoot Winchester Universal bulk packs. That stuff will jam up after a few rounds. I've yet to try polishing the chamber, but Federal bulk and all other brands seem to be fine.

I bought my 870 Express in August '06 and had to file down the extractor to relieve the constant issues with FTE's. In contrast, I bought a 500 Cruiser a year or two later and never have had any issues. I think I've cleaned it once since.

My only complaint with every post 08 remington I own! 700's, 870's they are rusts best friend. Only 3 guns in my safe that I can't keep clean of rust


That said, I do have the sweatiest hands of mand kind and live >2 miles from the beach.

This. You can find Wingmasters for $300 all day long. You can also get Police versions for around $500 and they are out there.

Much better decision IMO.

I didn't listen to everyone and got the new one. My buddy got a used wingmaster. Once I saw his gun I kicked myself and swore to listen to those who knew better.
