    1st time shotgun buyer

Reading the shotgun flow chart, I came away with a conclusion that shot guns are pretty much like AR/AK. That is, they must have a BB and the OAL > 26. Mag limits are 10rd. Other than that, there isn't much to worry about when you buy a shot gun. I'm currently looking on GB to get a Vepr 12 gauge. The out of state vendor probably needs to install a BB prior to sending it to my local FFL and that I still must wait 10 days just like long guns. Plus, I need to take a long gun certificate prior to drosing it. Am I correct so far? Is there anything else I need to know?

Buy only from vendors who are willing and know how to deal with CA laws, for that shotgun, you might as well get it from Atlantic Firearms:

No need for test. As long as you seem proficient in handling the shotgun the ffl will hand it over in 10days. Might even start dros. 10 days from when it was shipped.

Yes there is, as of 2015 all sales require an FSC.

Yeah...I forgot that where I saw the gun.

But if you're not, then you must take the test? I was under the impression that starting this year (2015), every long gun purchase must be accompanied with the long gun license. Or is it only applicable to AR/AK?

Well, shotguns, like rifles, are long guns. But there is no BB requirement for shotguns. As long as the seller is (or uses) an FFL, and the gun is shipped to an FFL in California, you're good to go. Of course, since Jan 1, 2015, ALL firearms buyers are required to have a Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) prior to the CA FFL receiving the gun.

            Good luck and safe shooting.

And the ten 24-hour waiting period begins when the CA FFL receives the gun and you sign the DROS documents, NOT when the gun is shipped. And many FFLs will count the required ten 24-hour periods to the minute. FYI.

I think there is. Atlantic firearms requires you to buy a BB when you buy their shot guns and send them to CA-FFL. The BB costs 45 bucks. I think if the gun has a detachable mag, it must have a BB. Otherwise, it's considered to be an assault rifle.

Okay, last thing, I promise - the FSC test can be taken at any Turners for $25 (I think). You are allowed no more than five wrong answers. Although it is not a very difficult test, there is a PDF study guide that can be downloaded.

And the barrel is at least 18.5" long from breach face to muzzle.

OP - yes, if the shotgun has a detachable magazine, a BB is required. Honestly though, shotguns and detachable mags never crossed my mind - not my thing.

                        Yeah...that too.

Some FFLs will in fact start the DROS when the weapon is shipped if they are comfortable with the shipping FFL. It's the FFL's call on how they want to handle it though not the buyers.

FFLs are REQUIRED to count the 10 day wait "to the minute" and any that don't are setting themselves up for problems if DOJ does a check. People that can't figure this out are the reason some stores do an 11 day wait so there is no question the minimum time has passed prior to pick-up.

And if you want more than 10 shots, look at KSG shotgun. Legal in CA, holds 7+7+1 of 2 3/4 shot shells.
The test is for retards. I never studied, English is not my first language /not second either/, and I still got the test. All you have to remember- legal age for long guns is 18, for hand guns is 21. The rest is common sense.
                            Good luck!

If a buyer doesn't already have an FSC then the test for an FSC is indeed mandatory and has noting to do with how "proficient you seem" when handling the weapon.
