    Youth shotgun help

My daughter has decided she wants to head out and go hunting with me this year. She wanted a bow but I sold her in a shotgun instead due to its versatility and the shorter learning curve. We were at bass pro last weekend and we took a look at a few 20g guns and it's obvious she will need a bantam/ youth model. the only one they had at the time was a mossberg turkey model but it did fit her pretty well. What are you all using for your kids and what have you done for recoil sensitive kids?
She has experience right now with a 22 and a 410 so I know she can shoot but she doesn't particularly like the shotgun recoil. The only thing I could really think of was to install a limb saver on it to help her since a 20g will have more punch than a 410 especially when we start talking waterfowl loads which is primarily what I like to hunt.

My wife shoots a 20ga Rem 1100 youth model. It's very soft.

If you're near Raahauge's you're welcome to try it out.

I was going to buy one of these (see link below). Luckily, my father in law was persuaded to offer up his Benelli Montefeltro 20 guage.

My son shot this gun last year and liked it. There was a calgunner out of redding that was trying to sell one.

In addition to the shotgun stock recoil pad, try to get your daughter a good-quality-and-fit recoil shoulder pad. It would really help.

I'll have to look into that weatherby and remington. The motefeltro is beautiful. I want one for myself.

When you say a good quality and fit recoil shoulder pad I was thinking like a limb saver pad. Is that what you are talking about?

I bought my wife (4'10"/100lbs) the Escort 20G Youth model semi-auto and have been impressed with it.

My girlfriend bought the youth model weatherby sa08 20 gauge. It shoots awesome and is extremely light. She has taken pheasant and also turkey with it. She is 5' tall and 98 lbs. absolutely perfect shotgun for her. We looked at all of them. Tristar, escort, Mossberg and so forth. For the price she really liked the Weatherby the best.
She got the black synthetic and then I did all the camo hydrodipping in the pattern of her choice.

Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was something like this (just a random picture from Google-ing shoulder pad, to illustrate the idea.)

Just my 2 cents but I don't think that one can go wrong with one of the Weatherby models. The SA-20 is a lightweight, smooth shooter from reviews I've seen. The compact model in that or the Wby. PA-08 is the way to go. Word of warning, the pump PA-08 20 ga. has a bit more kick than I thought it would.

Another great option is the pump SXP now in 20 ga. Those feel almost like an auto. The inertia driven bolt really helps to lighten the recoil- I would take my 12 ga. SXP over the Wby pump for trap shooting and the raised rib keeps the eye on the bird...

The 20ga 11-87 Compact youth model is a great gun. Also, since you mentioned hunting you could wait till August and there will a $40 cash rebate with it. It also has a LOP spacer kit so it can grow with her.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Try a bunch of guns and find one that fits her the best. It can be the best gun in the world but if it is a lousy fit she will struggle with hits and recoil. Pay or take someone with you who has a lot of shooting clays experience and knows how to fit a shotgun. Remember light weight and recoil usually do not go together. I have a Beretta A400 w/ the Kickeeze and smaller stature people usually like to shoot it.

We also use an 11-87 20ga youth. Much more manageable recoil.

I will be buying this in a few months since we are getting ready to move across country and I will have to wait 30 days after arriving to make a purchase in NC from what I understand. That weatherby looks really appealing. I would love a semi auto gun for her since I know it will shoot softer than a pump, but I use a pump and I believe it teaches better shot discipline as you have less of a chance for that follow on shot. I'm hoping I can find a good store out there that will have a few different models that she can look at and decide what she likes. It seems most places don't really stock a lot of youth models. Right now I know the mossberg 500 bantam looked comfortable for her so I can adjust from there knowing the specs on the gun.

Thanks for clarifying the shoulder pad. I've seen those before but wasn't sure if they were worth a damn.

I would put a limbsaver recoil pad on the shotgun. Those pads are awesome. I have a browning reactor pad (thinks that's the name) that goes over my shoulder. It's great for high volume shoots. It's very thin! Don't but a thick shoulder pad - it changes where your cheek rests on the stock (increases lop).
