Just bough an used Mossberg. Overall it is in good condition. However, there is small blemish close to the muzzle on the barrel, as shown in the attached picture. The previous owner tried to repair it but obviously made a bit worse. Is there any way that I can repair it be myself? I don't care too much about how it looks but am concerned about potential rusting and corrosion. I will appreciate any advice.

Spot Repair Parkerized Finish

For small jobs, i have success with a product called Birchwood Casey Perma Blue. You can sand down the area with steel wool and apply with a rag.Visit www.npfreedom.com for discounted firearm parts and accessories -
There is no spot repair for Parkerizing. I whish there was as I have parkerized thousands of guns and it is a heart breaker to have to blast off a perfect park job because of one spot. Keep the weapon oiled and there should be no issue. You can see where the guy tried to rub it down with steel wool and then use cold blue. He only made it worse. If it was down to bare steel then he should have simply degreased the area and dabbed some cold blue on it, not rub off the finish with steel wool. I say leave it be as it is a cosmetic issue only. Here is a before and after of my Parkerizing to show that I do in fact know the subject. You can see by the serial number it is the same gun. Just adding this because you never know on these forums if you are getting advise from someone who knows the subject.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.Comment

I know the previous owner has used steel wool but did not realize he has used cold blue. Then I will just clean it and then put some froglube on it. Thanks for advice.Comment

Have you priced a new barrel?
Swap that puppy out for a newer one without that blem.
I'd hang on to that one as a hunting/rain/class barrel if it bothers you.Originally posted by tony270It's easy to be a keyboard warrior, you would melt like wax in front of me, you wouldn't be able to move your lips.Originally posted by repubconservPrint it out and frame it for all I careOriginally posted by el chivoI don't need to think at all..XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOriginally posted by pjsigYou are talking to someone who already won this lame conversation, not a brick a wall. Thanks for the advice. I am not very concerned about the looking. I just wonder how the barrel got that flat spot (or it is just the way it is supposed to be), especially it looks like there was some number or letter on that flat spot which has been partially scratched off.Comment

I find that quality cold blue works just fine for touching up small blemishes in park - just NEVER use steel wool.Comment

Yes, that is the design. It would not fit if that area was rounded off. Time to get out and get some round count on that fine gun. You are going to get dings and scratches on a shooting gun and the only way to avoid it is to leave it in the gun safe. After the first few nicks you will not even care as long as the weapon functions perfectly. You picked a good solid fighting shotgun.JD McGuire, Owner
