dowel size? 870 grip

I cut down a police stock to a bird head. (I didn't know these are hard to find). It was$10 for the set at a shop in modesto. Has anyone made one before? Any advise. I want just going hit orchard and find a dowel that is a bit tight and sand to fit after I drill a hole for the bolt to pass threw the grip.. I have wood glue I hope that will be fine. I'm was just going to cut the old bolt and die the old bolt. I saw a guy on Google that did this but he said epoxy. In the picture it looked like gorilla glue. Anyone know If wood glue won't hold up to recoil?

Tightbond III is the glue you want. Gorilla glue is for oily wood like teak.

Are you drilling a new hole for the receiver bolt? Speedfeed made a birds head grip that you can still find. Botach I think has some in stock. The shape of the Speedfeed is a bit nicer than the shockwave raptor grip imo. I searched for a Speedfeed that properly fits the Mossberg 500 but they discontinued it many years ago.

The only time I made a DIY birds head grip was for the new Winchester sxp because I couldn't buy one. But I sold that gun and bought a Mossberg 500 and I now have a raptor grip on it.

I traced the speed feed on the old stock. The hole is to big now. The screw will slide through the grip. The hole must be filled and re drilled. This, will give the bolt head some thing to grab onto. This, will stop the grip from sliding off the back of the receiver.
Using the dowel as filler I need a way to secure the dowel to the inside of the grip.

I don't have a drill press any longer. It was a cheap one. So I will be drilling the new hole in the end of the dowel with a, hand drill.

No it does not need to be filled and redrilled. You simply drill an over size hole about one inch into the stock. You then cut your bolt off to be able to screw into the receiver stud but be about 1/4" longer then the smaller hole. You use a couple washers that are larger then the small hole you drilled for the stock bolt. Your stock is installed. You can plug the large hole with the dowel but I would not glue it as you would have to cut it off to remove the stock. Put it in there tight and if you want to remove it simply screw a wood screw into the end of dowel and pull it out so you can get to the stock bolt. Also, please never cut up an 870P wood set as that set is over $240 new and still worth good money even used.

^^^yes something like that would work. I would add a sleeve, pvc pipe, something? from the plumbing dept, to fill the gap around the bolt, then use a washer as noted above. Drilling a hole by hand is very tricky if you're expecting the alignment to be just right...unless you have it perfectly dialed in on a drill press there's 99% chance that it will be drilled off center.

Drill a counter sunk hole hole the dial of the washer is much simpler but I'd still recommend a drill press. If you don't have access to a drill press then make a jig that lines up the bit. I'd probably use a spade bit to get the nice flat cut and use a piece of plastic tube on the point to keep in centered.

When I made the grip for the sxp I cut a groove into the wood then glued the two pieces together so I had a square pilot hole in the center. Then I drill it out using a slightly larger dia bit until I got the right dia hole. I did that with a drill press but it could have worked equally well with a hand drill because I started with a pertly centered pilot hole.

I will post some pictures. I will strip it and Lynn seed oil it. A, light and the scatter gun technology 1 shot extension will go on maybe their sights if I can find another wood stock.

Yeah I had no idea it was worth anything. The guys at the gun store gave me the option for this set and the laminate set. I went with the better end result. Not a total loss the extra I have mapped out and rough cut new grips for my nna mini revolver! Plus I have enough wood to make some 1911 grips.
I just wish I would have researched it before cutting. They had 2 more sets so I'm calling seirra arms tomorrow to have them hold one. So there should be one more out there!
