Is the maverick 88 worth buying?

So I was at big 5 checking out the Mossberg shotguns, and I noticed the maverick 88 and its price.


I thought about getting it, but wasnt too sure if i should or not. Im basically just going to use it for home security, range?, and clay shooting?


Also I wasnt sure if there were mods that I could do on the maverick 88 compared to the mossberg 500.




But all in all what do you guys think? You think the 88 is worth buying and upgrading? Would this be descent to do all 3 things? Its listed at 250 right now, but im waiting for a sale.

If you just want it to keep at home for budget shotgun I guess do it, if you are seriously wanting a clays gun forget it. I would save an extra 50 or so and get a 500 or a rem 870 used

Also pass on Big 5's mossy 500's. They are not the same as you would find in a gun shop. I believe they are made in mexico. I got the Gold package 500 from my LGS for around 400 OTD, it came with a wood stock and 2 barrels. I sold the stock and 28" barrel on ebay for $200.

The Maverick 88 and Moss 500 are the same gun.
The Maverick uses a few cost saving measures to lower the price.
The Moss 500 is easier to customize, the Maverick is less expensive if you just want an HD shotty.

There is no difference in power between two 12ga shotguns with barrels of the same length, regardless of manufacturer.

BTW, all Mavericks are made in Mexico, this has nothing to do with Big 5.
The idea that products of the same model are different depending on where you buy them is almost universally false.

For starters...stay out of big 5,worst gun shop period if you can even call it that. If you want to shop big box at least go to turners, they have some good stores like fountain valley.

The location of the safety and the metal pump action of the forend make the few extra $ for the 500 a worthwhile upgrade over the maverick.

Great shotgun for the money! Mine is almost 25 years old and has never malfunctioned.

I prefer the Maverick 88's lightweight and ergos to the heavy and easily rusted Remington 870 Express (that I sold).

As far as the crossbolt safety on the Maverick 88; there have been malfunctioning (light primer strikes) issues on the Mossberg 590 shotguns where the safety was suspected of being the cause.

It is great for what it is: an inexpensive shotgun. It will go bang when you pull the trigger. I have about 700 rounds out of mine (combo of bird/buck/slug) and the only times it has malfunctioned were due to operator error. It takes almost any accessory or part that the 500 does. I do use and trust it for home defense.

That said, if I knew then what I know now, I would have just bought a higher-end shotgun from the start (likely a 590).

Ive had both a maverick 88 and a mossberg 500. If you're not going to be super into shotguns, just get the maverick. there isnt much that can go wrong with it.

Purchased a Maverick 88 about 20 years ago. Shot lots of rounds, with no mechanical failures.

If you just need a basic shotty, the 88 will do the job for little $$$. As far as power is concerned, what you're shooting (ammo choice) is more important than what you're shooting it out of (just needs to go bang).

Although if you want to do some clay shooting, I think the 870 is a better choice. I've been using my 500 with 28" barrel and I find my brother's 870 with 26" barrel much better balanced. The 500 is rather muzzle-heavy. The 870 is a bit heavier overall as well, but it helped with managing recoil.

Mav88 8 shots is $200. Mossy 500 (notBig5) 8 shots is over $350
Though I prefer Mav88. Being lighter.
