Mossberg 500 - Better Sights?

Recently took a class with my Mossberg 500 where we used slugs at 50 yards (I was not effective at that distance by any stretch of the imagination) -- I don't see Home Defense requiring more than 7-8 yards but would still like to improve my aim with both the 18.5 HD barrel and a 28 Accu-choke Skeet barrel. Which means I need something similar for two barrels ( 2 x $) to be consistent.

I'm not trying to add a big rifle scope (big in price or weight) ... loved the simple XS dots on my handguns and they have multiple options from $60 to $180 but I don't know if one setup works better than another.

Important: also found I had more trouble lining up the rear sight (fuzzy black) than the bright little front sight bead -- my eyes are not what they used to be but am I the only one with that problem?

Single bead just sucks for slug over 25 yards. It costs way too much to add any type of rifle sights. Which often cost more than 1/2 of the shotgun !! You are always better off to buy shotgun that came with ghost ring already.

In your case. Cheapest is probably mount a red dot on it. I have pretty good luck with the $60 trs-25 on a shotgun. But then again I only shoot low recoil ammo

I just really struggle to get the bead and what looks like a pretty fuzzy long black rear sight path lined up -- I think I mostly shot high when on longer 35-50 yard slug shots.

I've got a pair of these: http://www.truglo.com/firearms-turke...gobble-dot.asp Never really used them (they were installed on my M500 when I bought it, but I took them off since the dual bead setup is better for clays), so I can't really comment on how good they are.

Not sure what your fuzzy long sight is or if you have a rear sight monunted on the gun

Maybe some time with a shotgun shooting coach is the way to go. I'm gathering that no one has shown you how to put shots on target with a shotgun.

Meeting with someone in a couple weeks for closer to one-on-one training.

Hoping to get to the CalGuns forum Skeet training someday but it's a 2+ hour drive before adjusting for traffic from here (Palm Desert area), and I didn't want to go until I felt I had made more progress with the shotgun.

Its not a hard skill to learn, just need to find a good coach or mentor.

Here are some places, hopfully close to you to find some help...don't throw in the towel until you have had some good instruction...I'll bet you will be pleasantly surprised how well you inprove.

And I appreciate the encouragement... I really DO want to do well with the pump as it's a fun challenge to handle it well... but being a bad marksman rather takes the fun out of the effort. Will keep trying.

Why don't you consider adding a rail to your Mossberg 500, that way you can you select from a huge array of red dot sights?

My wife use a Redring reflex sight on her Benelli M2 Field Compact 12 gauge and it let her shoot a lot better. For slug shooting, I think it'll help a lot.
