How do you practice with an HD shotgun? I have a 28" barrel field gun that I practice with by shooting trap. I also have an 18" barrel HD gun with a light and magazine tube extension, etc.. that collects dust in a safe. I understand it is frowned upon to take such a gun to a clay shooting range. Shooting at paper/ cardboard at a rifle/ pistol range seems pointless as it is completely destroyed after shooting for like 10 minutes (at $30 range fee it seems pretty steep for 10 minutes of shooting). Where can I shoot/ practice with a shotgun with a HD setup in a fun way in southern california?

Where do you live? A Place To Shoot in Saugus has a steel target range as well as a manual clay thrower range where you can shoot your 18" shotguns with cheap birdshot or buckshot all day long.Comment

If you're in the SF Bay Area, Metcalf Field Sports park will let you use your tactical shotgun to shoot trap and skeet. It is pretty awesome actually, considering that the range is operated by the county.
For me, I just use my trap shooting shotgun with its 28" barrel for HD. The only time it doesn't work well is if I need to bring a shotgun with me in the car for mobile defense, like this coming Chinese New Year weekend during which I have to go to Hayward for dinner at my in law's place. I'm forced to bring my wife's Benelli M2 Field Compact 12 gauge instead, I shoot it from time to time but do better with my own.Last edited by bigbearbear; 02-10-2015, 11:09 PM.Comment

Some of the best practice you can do with a pump is shoot clay doubles..Trap Doubles, Skeet , Sporting clays. You will be practicing using the pump for more then one shot and practice hitting targets with a second shot. Short pumping, lowering the gun to pump, taking your focus off the target to pump will disappear. Much better practice then shooting at a target that is static and right in front of you.Comment

I'm in southern California (inland empire, near o.c. border). I have not asked at the local ranges if tactical shotguns are allowed (mostly for fear of sounding dumb) but I know that it is generally frowned upon.Comment

Sure it may be frowned on at the clay range but if it's okay to use there then who cares? I've taken my 18.5" Benelli M4 out a few times to the trap range for fun just so I can get the practice of handling it...."Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."Comment

That's exactly what I was asking, actually, is where in southern California can you do this? (Shoot at soda bottles, watermelons, CMU blocks, etc...) I see this kind of shooting done on YouTube videos and it looks like fun.Comment

I go to Raahauge's range in Corona or Burro Canyon private range and run drills like I would with a pistol on cardboard and bowling pins. Yeah they get chewed up pretty fast but you can move and shoot, shoot from cover, and we even do clay pigeons at Burro from the hand thrower.Comment
