Build a dedicated AR in .22 or buy complete?

Hey all,

For a very long time I wanted a HK mp5 SD in .22lr, but I also have an extra AR lower which I could buy or build a dedicated complete upper. They would be about the same price. Which of the two would be more accurate, reliable, and eat every bulk ammo?

Build complete. Makes no sense to convert an AR into a 22. Tried it and ended up selling the conversion kit. Get a 10/22 for your dedicated 22lr rifle. If available, just get the action. They have tons of aftermarket part for the 10/22.

I like my cmmg conversion bolt and it works 100%. It is very accurate to 50yds. The only thing I dont like is the mess it leaves in the gun (lower).

I've reAd about the mess it can leave and clogging of the gas tube which a few rounds of 223/556 should clear it right up at the end of the day. Sound like a complete upper is the way to go. But I am loving that mp5 though. Talk me out of the mp5 and why?

I built a dedicated .22 upper with the CMMG conversion bolt and a dedicated .22LR barrel. It is not as accurate as some of my other .22LRs, but it is more than enough for training. Besides, it lets me have an un-neutered AR lower. The nice thing is that I don't care if it leaves a mess in the barrel. There is no gas system to get clogged up or anything.

If you have an AR then buy a dedicated 22 lr upper. Then there is the real AR feel.

I used to have a S&W M&P 15-22, and it's a great rifle...but I like having the option of swapping uppers and lowers interchangeably between my AR's.


If you want a good trainer for the AR platform, the 15-22 is a great option. You'd be able to find them for $369-399 on sale which would be about $460 OTD.

I recommend using your lower and building a .22 lr AR. Midway has a CMMG .22 lr barrel/bolt combo. Get that along with your choice of upper/rail. The CMMG .22 action is very reliable particularly after a good few bricks of ammo shot through it.

While the overall cost of building a .22 lr is going to be more expensive, its worth it. My .22 AR is my most used gun, and like it so much I'm building another.

There's plenty of threads on this subject. The answer is generally the same.

If you want a standalone at with little or no interchangeability that is reliable and affordable get the m&p15-22.

If you want something that has more heft, more interchangeability, and costs more, build a 22lr upper.

Good eyes! Once I found out about the moe-sl handguards I had to get one; very sleek looking and very comfortable. I figured since its a trainer I didn't really need any fancy quad rails or free float systems (not hating on the peeps that do trick out their 22 AR's, but just not what I needed).

That grip is pretty decent as well, only $11.20 and manufactured by Spike's Tactical.

I'm digging the barrel shroud and color-filled text, the Eotech and magnifier says "I'm simple but sexy", and the flare launcher is just too cool!

I hear ya on the moe-sl, I'm waiting for a mid-length version so I can build another AR. My friend bought the same ST grip, very nice.
