10/22 mag release help and advice

I have the day off and was going to take my son to the range to shoot the reactive targets. Grab the 10/22 out of the safe, go to make sure it's unloaded and the plastic mag release falls off.

I look inside and it appears to held in place by a pin. Looked all over the floor and safe - couldn't locate the pin. Sent Ruger an email and asked for a new one. While looking inside the gun where the mag would go, a bolt and spring come out. I'm assuming this holds the mag in place.

Anyhow, was curious if this is a difficult piece to fix and if this is a good time to replace the mag release with an aftermarket one?

    Thanks

Yes it is a good time to upgrade.
    Not hard to install.
I have extended releases and the cross pin available if you need one.
    I'm north of Pasadena.
PM if you are close and want to fix it right away.

I'm up in the sac area - thanks. Is this a common problem? Thinking I may want to carry a crosspin in the handle of my tapco stock.

The cross pin can only come out when the action is removed from the stock.
Most likely it fell out the last time you cleaned the gun or had the stock off for modifications.

In a pinch you can use a 1" long 4-40 screw with the head cut off.

Ok - my bad. I cleaned it after my last trip to the range. I was just checkin out upgrades and read good things about volquartsen auto bolt release and extended mag release.

Any other suggestions or "must haves?"

The auto release and extended catch are the two "must haves" to do.
Consider a hammer kit (-$40) or hammer and sear kit (-$60) for the next mods.

Thank you - my mistake may have been a good thing, for a change.

Good advice in here, the auto release is a definite must have.

I also added a Power Custom Hammer and Sear kit which made my trigger much nicer. I'll be changing out my extractor soon, my 10/22 has had constant stove pipes since day 1.

If you're getting a bunch of parts you may want to add those too

You can also modify your existing parts to do the auto bolt release. If you screw it up, you can buy the aftermarket part. Do the mod before you order parts, and you may save the 10 bucks or so on the aftermarket, if you are into DIY.

++ on the aftermarket auto bolt & extended mag. The bolt release makes it an easier to use rifle. The VQ extractors a nice upgrade also, get all 3. Worth every penny considering the performance you'll get from it.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Recommend getting a complete set of spare pins. They are so dang easy to drop when you are cleaning. I actually put a piece of tape on one side of a pin in the receiver, so it wouldn't just fall out when I took off the stock and turned the receiver over. Spare spring kits are good too, but those little pins are really important.

Here's a link. I'm not the ebay seller, but I do like that all the pins are in the kit. Easy to carry around. You might want to consider a spare spring kit. Mine have leaped across the room while cleaning the 10/22....

Thanks for all your help. 2 pins, auto release and extended mag on its way.

Received volquartsrn auto bolt release and extended mag release. I ordered two pins but it's not the correct pin. I think once I order and install the correct pin, I'll be good. Look correct?
