    Looking to get 10/22

I am looking to get 10/22 and I narrowed it down to the following choices:

    1. Tactical with rail and a bipod
    2. The cheapest and outfit it with a rail and a bipod
    3. Takedown and outfit it with a rail and bipod

Can you recommend which one would be your choice and why?

one option is to get the cheapest one and take a look at the KIDD website for barrels/upgrades

if you are mainly shooting from a bench, then forget the rail and bipod, just use a bag. that way you can easily shoot off hand without all that extra weight.

Shop for an early one. Newer don't have the quality painted instead of anodized receiver, plastic trigger guards, poorer fit and finish. The list goes on as Ruger has been losing quality over the last couple years. The shortage required many untrained or undertrained to be producing guns. Later lay-offs and the ending of the company pension plan makes for unhappy workers whose job just boils down to pushing product out the door.

#2-shop your LGS or gun show. Look for an earlier manufacture. Metal trigger and trigger guard as well as the older style mag release are giveaways to a quality model. It's highly unlikely that it's been shot out, nearly impossible with .22.

10/22's are some of the most overplayed guns ever. They're great shooters out of the box. Personally I found mine fun to work on and learn some basic gunsmith skills. The best part is if you fubu a part you can find OEM parts everywhere for cheap from people who have tacti-over-killed their guns. Guys on another forum gave me trigger groups, bolts, and other miscellaneous parts for free. In the end I did put a bull barrel on that wasn't oem. I only did this because I wanted something that weighed in similarly to my hunting rifle.

Get a 10/22 if you're interested in them, although I think some marlins are better guns. Easier mags, mag release, tube mag if you want, etc. Just don't KIDD yourself into thinking you have to volquartsen it out to the tune of several hundred dollars.

Spend your money and time on finding the ammo it likes best and shoot it!

Bull barrel 10/22s are best for bench or rested shooting.
They can get heavy real quick for off-hand shooting.

Take Down is great for limited space or transport by motorcycle etc.

Standard is good all around and is like a blank canvas to paint your picture on.

Option 2. You're gonna spend the money on upgrades anyway, so why not start cheap?
Wish I was rich instead of so damn good looking.

The difference in quality between the 10/22 I purchased new in 1994 and the one my brother bought new two years ago is really apparent. So sad to see such a great company decline like that.

I just purchased a 10/22 last month from dick's. It was on sale for 199. Hard to pass up right. Well... I took it apart to clean it and see how it's works and what not. I was surprised with the lack of quality. The bolt has machine groves on it. There was over paint spray on the inside of the receiver. Every part that could be plastic was. Pins in the trigger group just fell out. It was disappointing. I don't have experience with other 10/22 so I'm not sure if they are like this or if it's just the newer models. It sounds like the older models are better built. It might something to look into.

                        10/22 can't be beat.

But you'll face another problem, good luck finding .22 ammo anywhere.
Lack of supply has forced me to ground my 10/22 for over a year now.

It used to be that you could find very good 10/22s at a pawn shop as a base for your builds.

There is a whole check list of components to decide on when building a target 10/22. For instance when one says bull barrel it could be light or heavy depending on your preference. There are many aluminum and carbon fiber .920 barrels to choose from.

Older receivers are great, but the pot metal trigger guards are very inconsistent. Kidd, Brimstone and most 10/22 Gunsmiths all say the same thing. In short, they are crap, and unless it's a period-correct restoration project, I would avoid using one.
