I see a number of brand names selling dedicated .22lr uppers for ar15. Problem is almost every one seems to have a reviewer complaining about jams. I also wonder how many of these uppers may be .223 diameter. Does any particular brand have a reputation for reliability and accuracy? Is building one from parts an option? accurate/reliable .22lr upper for AR15?
Tags: None -
m&p 15-22 is reliable. i also got a dedicated .22lr from tactical solutions that is ammo picky but reliable.
M&P .22 will be your most reliable option. but a dedicated .22 will be more accurate.Last edited by pluke the 2; 10-24-2014, 11:11 AM. -

Both our CMMG dedicated uppers are 100% reliable. A 15-22 is pretty reliable too. But to say a 15-22 is the "most reliable option" is misleading. We can run drum after drum of 50 rounders and never have a malfunction on any ammo. Even Remington and Standard Velocity stuff.
I do like the SW 15-22 mags. They will give you full AR15 operation too with the addition of the Better Mag Adapter.
I cannot get past the the SW being plastic and of a proprietary design. They are good little rifles. But the Dedicated uppers are far above, as reflected by the price though too. I considered a SW but am so glad we went the dedicated route instead. Well worth the extra money.
Anything you can put on a AR15. You can put on a dedicated upper. It is just a AR15 that happens to shoot .22 rimfire. Swap the .22 upper with a 5.56 upper in seconds and be shooting that too. Try that with the SW
One of our CMMGs has a stock barrel, the other a Taccom Barrel. Both are very, very, very, reliable..Almost to the point it is scary. Have not had a malfunction in either one in so long. I cannot even remember if we ever did..We shoot them alot too. 1000s upon 1000s of rounds.
Here is a pic of one of ours with the Taccom barrel. Very reliable and accurate to.
Taccom and CMMG both sell very high Quality stuff, and have great customer service to back their products.

I would highly recommend a CMMG .22 lr upper. Mine has been very reliable, even with cheap ammo such as Win 555, Thunderbolts and Golden bullets. Accurate as well, 1 inch groups at 50 yards with PA red dot and magnifier. Also spare parts are readily available for these, you can replace the complete BCG once it wears out no problem.
Here is my rig on a JD machine lower. I have since added a ALG ACT trigger(need to use a trigger will a full power hammer spring, have to hit the primer hard on a .22 lr), and a Primary Arms red dot. Also have given it a FDE paint job.

.22 lr ARs are too much fun to shoot, and I am sure are a contributing factor to the .22 lr shortage.Comment

I've played with most and hands down the dpms, nordic or JP action is the best most reliable.Last edited by surfNshoot; 10-25-2014, 8:51 AM.Comment

I use two Ciener .22LR conversion bolts, one for me, one for the wife.
Reliability is excellent, depending on which gun you use. Her Sun Devil AR shoots them all day, never a jam or miss-fire. 100% in the last two range trips. She will shoot about 300 rounds, all fired fine.
My 20" Del-ton upper also loves them and shoots them with decent accuracy for a 1/9 twist.
My 16" DD and 14.5" DD doesn't do as well, I get stuck casings. The 7.5" AR pistol also works great, no problems. The BCM upper also loves these bolts. All of these guns have ALG QMS triggers and the JP yellow springs, never a firing problem.
The JD machine uppers work better than some others I've used. They are tight and there is less slop.
I did a bit of work on them to get them to work this well. The slides were polished and so were the feed ramps. I used a brass brush to polish the chambers. All that work paid off, these bolts work great. A little Slip 2000 EWL and they run like a champ.Comment

While we are on the topic, does anyone run a CMMG upper with a ALG ACT trigger with JP yellow springs? Reliable?Comment

Couldn't agree more. I've had some issues in the beginning but the reliability kit solved that and it's now running 100%.CMMG with the Taccom reliability kit
