cleaning a Ruger 10/22, remove barrel?

Something has been rolling around in my mind about cleaning the Ruger 10/22. There's the question of whether or not to remove the barrel when cleaning. Conventional wisdom tells me that it's best to insert the cleaning rod from the breech. In line with this, I've seen some people advocate drilling a hole in the rear of the receiver to allow for this while keeping the barrel mounted and thus preserving the aim. Is this a good idea? Should I just keep the barrel on? Should I just continue taking the barrel off when cleaning?

That is cheaper than most one piece cleaning rods

Boresnake, or clean it from the muzzle end. I can't imagine drilling a hole in your rifle just to run a patch from back to front vs. front to back.

Very common practice, and for those of us that have VQ, Kidd, or likewise barrel with slightly oversized shanks, it's either a boresnake, or a hole in the rear of the receiver to access the bore with a cleaning rod.

I use my Otis cleaning kit that I use for my ARs, if and when I clean it. Every 10k rounds or so....

Boresnake or muzzle end guide rod.

The downside of cleaning from the muzzle is that you can damage the barrel's crown which adversely affects accuracy. To recrown a barrel is a minor, and inexpensive process. You can also use a bore guide designed for use on the muzzle. In my opinion, you are discussing a factory Ruger 10-22 which is an excellent rifle but it is not an expensive competition rifle.

Just use an all brass and copper brush, and a brass, aluminum, or coated rod. Just no steel parts anywhere. Go in from the muzzle and just pay attention to go in straight. Never damaged a muzzle crown yet in 50 years of cleaning.

I used an Otis cleaning kit with a short .22 brush designed for clearance limited breeches. Works great.

Come over to Rim Fire Central, we will tell you all about care and feeding of your 10-22. No, you don't want to remove the barrel to clean, and you don't need to drill the receiver either. That is dinosaur logic in play. I like the bore snake, some don't. I also use an Otis on my match single shot bolt rifles, because the ejectors are in the way of a cleaning rod and snake. Rimfires tend to group better with a slightly dirty barrel, as long as there is no leading present. Spray dry lube is the way to go on the 10-22 for the trigger group and bolt, it keeps the nasty mud from forming like it does with oil.
