    New/old .22 and range report

    Hey all,

A few of you replied to an earlier post re: some help with my Dad's Remington 511 that he handed me last week.

The short story is we got to digging around in his attic and he asked me to find the rifle my grandfather had given him when he was a high school kid in 1947. The gun looks like a 1945 production date and my Dad hasn't shot it in over 50 years.

It's been put away, uncased amongst some old golf clubs and other stuff over the years. It's well used but certainly not abused.

Short story...I cleaned it up, lubed the bolt and oiled up the stock and we took it to the range. My Dad and I had an absolute blast.

Following that I ordered up a couple 10 rounds mags from Brownell's and a box of CCI from Cabela's. The original 6 round mag wouldn't feed the tube properly but the new ones work perfectly.

The new mags and ammo came this week and I couldn't stand waiting any longer to test it all so yesterday I made a quick after work trip to the range for a test run.

Here's the result. Shooting at 25 yards, indoors with no rests or bags, 3 inch targets. I basically just emptied the mags on each target. The results below are my last two targets of the day.

Not great but I can't complain. I had never even shot a rifle before a couple weeks ago...and this thing shoots great. I shot 100 rounds in the short time I was there. I'm slowly but surely getting more comfortable with those old sights.

I'd love to hear from any other 511 shooters out there. Gotta say as well, I'm totally hooked, this is so much fun to shoot. Heading to our local outdoor range soon for the 50 and 100 yard targets. Can't wait to see how we roll.

I do not have a 511 but that is great you and your Dad were able to dig it out of the attic and put it to its intended use.

Great you are hooked on shooting it too. We need more shooters. (as long as they are sane that is) I assume you are

Hopefully you will cherish it and maybe someday introduce your kids to shooting with it..Have Fun

How about a pic of the rifle?

Similar experience for me also. Mine has as an old 4x scope on it. I had roughly tennis ball sized groups at 50 yards without being real serious about it. Might need to order a new mag for mine also since the spring seems a little weak/worn.

Hey Cap'n, here's the mags I ordered. Not a single issue so far. I didn't do a lot of price shopping...frankly I was happy to find them.

Is that 4x scope one of the originals? My gun doesn't have any of the grooves for a scope and I don't think I want to drill it for mounts.

          Thanks for the link DRPoolio.

Mine has the grooves for mounting & I believe it's a Bushnell. I don't know if it's original. It was originally my grandfather's and he died when I was two.

It was the first rifle I ever shot as well.

I see pics of targets, but I can't see a pic of the rifle.

Hang onto that Remington. They are well made pieces of history, especially yours with the family connection. Give it a little TLC and it will something to enjoy shooting for many years. Great find.
