This is for people having issues finding particular ammo they need. You can use this method to supplement your current buying methods.
I've decided to contribute to my favorite forum by sharing with you all the capabilities of the Wal-Mart inventory system and how you can use it to your advantage in trying to obtain reasonably priced ammo locally.
First this will most likely be helpful to those in urban areas where there are several locations within driving distance. Second, I know this may well help the hoarders/scalpers/flippers but as far as I know they already know the system, so I am posting this in the hopes that it will at least put the casuals out there on equal footing.
A bit of a Wal-Mart primer, first shift employees work 7-4pm every weekday, including the sporting goods department head. When they get ammo, it will come in the morning and they will likely come walking up to their area with a cart of ammo at about 7:15am
Now, the question is when will the ammo you desire come on a truck to a store near you.
First of all download the Wal-Mart app, I use android but there is an IOS app as well with similar functionality.
Download this app and install it on your device.
Now that you have installed the app, do a search for 22LR Ammo and pick a type of ammo you wish to start tracking, this will obviously work for other ammo as well.
Tracking is the key word here, as chances are you know that your store does not have any 22LR ammo, but that's okay the point is to establish this for a number of stores in your area.
So long as you know none of the nearby stores have the type of ammo you want, you will know when they get it if you follow these instructions.
This is the current stock of 550 federal bulk packs, just like in the first pictures, as you can see every store near me has 0.
But that's okay, because so long as we know they have 0, we will know when they finally do get some, and armed with this knowledge, you too can get some.
As an example I am choosing 550 Federal bulk packs, It is currently showing at my closest store as being out of stock.
Press the button indicated to see the stock of the other stores in your area.
This picture shows the current stock of the closest stores in my area. Once again the fact that everyone is out of stock is a good thing. At least for what we are trying to accomplish here.
It may take weeks. But so long as you take the time every night, at 5-6pm to check the Wal-Mart app for the ammo you need, you can buy what you seek.

This is what you want to see.
If you checked the app the night before at 6pm and it showed out of stock.
And you now check the app and it is 6pm and you see availability unknown. That means that the ammo you seek, is currently being unloaded by second shift IMS/ICS employees, and will soon be on the way to ammo lockup.
In the morning the sporting goods head will waltz in at 7am, do his/her usual morning routine, then head to ammo lockup to grab said ammo then cart it out to the floor.
The whole point of all this was to arm yourself with this info so that you can be there to greet said department head and get your box limit.
I will say this, the system is not perfect. The sporting goods department head is not your enemy, be nice to them.
They've been on the other end of this ammo shortage with fudds and mall ninjas alike harassing them in person and over the phone for every type of scarce ammo type.
So if you go through all this and you go there one morning just to find a sporting goods department head who has no idea what the heck you are talking about. Ask them nicely to look again. If no luck with that, walk away and find an assistant manager.
Ask them to check the "on hands" of the item in question and then have them either look for it their selves or if they choose to, have the department head help them find it.
If neither can find it, forget it, there are other stores and other days. Don't make an enemy for $20 worth of ammo.
Regarding the "on hands".
Some Wal-Mart employees have these gun like devices. Motorola 9060's, 960's, Telzones, whatever you want to call them.
If you want to double check if they do or do not have an item, ask someone with one of these to check their current "on hands". This is the number that their perpetual inventory system shows as their current quantity of items in the building.
IF you ask the department head or a system manager to look up a upc or item number and they don't use one of these devices or a computer terminal, they are lying to you or being lazy.
