Rifle serial number???

I'm making a stock for a marlin model 60 and does the rifle serial number need to be seen or can it be coved up? I hate to cut a window in the upper shell just for that. I know it will make things easier if LEO wants to check it out.

It can be covered. For example, S&W revolvers have the S/N stamped in the bottom strap under the grips, necessitating removal to verify when being DROS'ed.
