Very accurate and small bolt gun??

My 9 year old son has a 10/22 that he loves shooting. It has a scope on it, which he proclaimed to be "cool".

The other day we went shooting with my neighbor who has a very old .22 bolt gun with precision iron sights on it. Crazy accurate gun. My son, who loves to blast away with his 10/22 surprised me by spending so much time shooting the bolt gun. He was taking his time, aiming his shots and basically doing everything you'd like to see your son doing.

So, I'd like to get my little guy a nice bolt gun with short length of pull and put a set of Williams precision iron sights on it, which are very similiar to the ones on my neighbors gun.

Not really all that familiar with .22 bolt guns as all my .22 rifles are 10/22's.

What are some quality bolt gun to consider? Not looking to spend crazy money but am fine with up to $500 or so (not including Williams sights).

Marlin makes a youth XT-22 a cheaper alternative to the CZ but since the CZ is in your price range you might want to go that way..

What did the neighbor have?
If you think he will outgrow a youth size rifle soon there are a lot more options out there. Plus these above are just two current production rifles... theres tons of options if you go used.

I bought my daughter a pink Crickett rifle. I also bought the Williams sights for it. Now, she's only 3, and too small to shoot it still. But Daddy had to 'function test' it. It is surprisingly accurate. While I haven't shot groups with it, I can ping a 3" steel every shot at 40 yards. It is a really fun, accurate little rifle, although I'd prefer a peep sight, the firesight rear does fine. Even though my daughter is too small to shoot it still, I taught her how to load it for me, and the four rules of gun safety. I shoot, eject, hand it to her, she loads a round and closes the bolt and hands it back, I cock it and shoot, rinse and repeat. I've put over 200 rounds through that rifle, 'testing it' for her. I can't wait until she can get her little hand around the wrist and reach the trigger.

You could also consider a Ruger American rimfire 22LR bolt . You can get different butt stock inserts to change the trigger pull lenght. So as he grows, so does the rifle. Also they take 10/22 rotory mags that you already have.
Pricing is about ~$290 ish.

Not exactly sure how small you want, but I really enjoy shooting my Savage Mark II (I own the Mark II TR). They have several models in the sub $500 price range. My 10 year old nephew handles it well when shooting prone or on bags, and it's something he can grow into.

TC Contender not a bolt action but single shot and very accurate. Can have barrels for different calibers.

Get him a nice CZ. He'll be giving it to his son so think ahead.

I had a single shot marlin bolt action when I was a kid. Way accurate and fun to shoot. With single shot bolt action I could out shoot all my friends with Semi auto's cuz I aimed and they sprayed.

Also this is not a bolt action but we shot these a lot as kids. Way fun 22 lever action

How about something like a old Remington. 514 or a Winchester 68. If you like target models a 521TL is a junior model and will be a great shooter and grow in value over the years. JM2C

Yeah, any of the Remington 5xx series guns.

My daughter went Distinguished Expert at 10 years old with a youth sized Remington 514 that I mounted Lyman peep sights on.

She's 18 now, but I still have the rifle. If you're local to me in the SF East Bay area, we could arrange to meet, let you two shoot it, and see if that's the type of gun he's/you're looking for.

Also (if you're local), we run a great youth program at the local range that meets twice a monthy, and there are a lot of folks up there with a lot of different rifles that you could look at and probably handle/shoot.

I bought a CZ 452 Scout for my Son. He didn't much care for it; likes autos better.

I like it though. Little short in the LOP but I've gotten used to it since it shoots right up there with my 452 American and Ultra Lux.





One nice thing about the Scout is that the action can be easily fit into an American stock for when your Son gets older. Lots of posts on the "Ameri-Scout" on RFC.
