Safe queen coming out for first time use...

    Hello all,

I have a 10/22 with a bunch of VQ stuff on it. It's been sitting in the safe for over a decade and plan on putting a scope on it and go out and enjoy her. Since its never been fired, what prep work should I do before firing? Oil it up? If so, where to oil? I would know where on an AR, but new to rimfire.

    Thanks for your advice.

In the years since your rifle last saw daylight, dry lube sprays have worked really well on rimfire guns. Because the ammo is so dirty, oil makes nasty mud with the powder residue, while dry lube doesn't. I have many rimfire rifles and pistols, and the only ones seeing any oil are the bolts on the bolt actions, and TW-25 grease on the slide rails of the pistols, The revolvers and 10-22's run just fine with dry lube. On the 10-22, I spray a good spritz into the roof of the receiver with the bolt locked open, then go shoot. I have 12 hand built by me 10-22's, and it's been over a year since I took one down for any reason. I brush the chamber every several hundred rounds, and don't clean the barrel unless accuracy is starting to suffer, which it has not after thousands of collective rounds. I have used One Shot and Liquid Wrench, both work good, the One Shot leaves no visible residue, and the Liquid Wrench leaves a whitish powder, easily wiped off the visible surfaces.

I'm not buyin' the "10/22 as safe queen."

Admit it... you forgot it was there in the back, didn't ya?

10 years? I would do a full strip, cleaning and lube before shooting.

^^ this. Always do a thorough clean and lube for safety and function check.
