After just a few hundred rounds, the extractor on my rifle simply popped out of the bolt, leaving the spring jammed in the action. I've ordered a VQ replacement (as well as a pair of OEM Ruger units for the range box). I couldn't find the missing part or plunger, so I can't say how it may have failed, but is this a common issue?

10/22 Extractor FAIL

I had issues with my 10/22 TD out of the box. Sent it back to Ruger and one of the things they fixed was the extractor.
On that note, most people tend to upgrade the extractor with an aftermarket one.You can give peace a chance...
We'll cover you if it doesn't work out... -
Sounds like the extractor was not pushed fully into the pivot hole in the bolt.
The extractor can work in this position but it will eventually go flying.
Check the pivot hole and the spring / plunger hole be sure there is not something in there to keep the extractor from going all the way in.
When installing the new parts, I pull the plunger back using a dental pick and push the extractor all the way into the hole.
Then ease the plunger forward being sure it rests squarely in notch in the extractor.
Extractor notch at upper right, pivot end at lower right.
