Talk me into buying a Ruger 22/45?

Hey guys. So Turner's was running a deal on the Ruger 22/45 Target a couple weeks ago and I decided to pass on it. A few days after the sale ended, I started thinking, man I should have just picked one up since they will be off roster soon. WELL Turners has another round of them, and it's a pretty good looking price. Problem is, I already have a lot of 22s that I never shoot and a mound of .22lr ammo taking up room in my safe. For whatever reason, I tend to get bored of 22's quickly. This could be due to the fact that none of mine are very accurate, not really sure. I think what appeals to me about this 22/45 target is the legendary accuracy (Or so I'm told) of them.

So what say you Calgunners of the rimfire section?! Thoughts and opinions? Is the grip really that similar to a 1911 - and if so, how do you like it? I already have a lot of 1911s, including a 1911-22 I rarely shoot anymore. It would be nice to find something a little new and different to earn a spot ion my safe.

I don't see a lot of these being sold used which tells me they must be worth keeping. Is $339+tax/fees a good enough price to jump on this even though I'm not exactly drooling over it?

No.

Everything you said is right on, except the price. Get a used one in the marketplace here. It's 'close enough' to a 1911 but if you have a actual 1911-22 then this won't fly. The grip and grip angle are about the only thing similar.

Do you want to sell any of your boring .22's?

It is going off the roster soon, so get it while you still can. Rugers are very accurate and reliable guns. There are lot of aftermarket parts too, you can get a great trigger job from Volquartsen, or you can buy an aftermarket grip from them too, if you don't like the original one.

If I bought this, the 1911-22 might find itself being re-homed. It's the <GSG> Sig Sauer 1911-22. I also have a Henry H001 large loop that I lost interest in pretty fast. I typically try not to sell any guns these days unless I need money, which I don't right now.

So I guess the consensus is that there's no reason for me to jump on this gun? To tell the truth, I really want a Stainless MKIII hunter target - based on looks alone - because it is just a beautiful gun. Seems like the price of those (even used) is a lot higher though, and they don't come around very often.

It's a little difficult to disassemble/ re-assemble the first time or two until you get the hang of it. On the up side a boresnake will make takedowns less.

on the plus side it shoots and shoots and shoots without a hiccup and pretty much puts lead where you point.

Mine has the replaceable grip panels and I put Hi-viz front sight on it.

I have 5 mags with those nice extended mag bumpers http://www.magbumper.com/22_45_Original.html.

the extra mags are nice for more shooting time but they were hard to find in the LGS.

I paid 330 new in Oregon about 2+ years ago for the pistol 2 mags.

I'm keeping mine unless I need to trade it for food.

Sounds like the exact same one I was looking at. 5 1/2" bull barrel, replaceable grips, weaver base and 2 mags for $339+tax.

I am kinda intrigued that it wouldn't feel exactly like a 1911.. something a little new and different would be nice. I wouldn't exactly go out and buy another 1911-22 you know.

Sounds nice. Now that you mention it, I had a 10/22 that I always loved working on and modifying. It would be fun to do some of those things to a Ruger pistol as well.

And it's not that I dislike the .22's. I can't explain it, I just get bored of them. I go through cycles where I will buy one, shoot it a whole lot and then leave it in the safe for a long time. I used to sell them, but now I more so just leave them in the safe until I get the itch to shoot them again. I think what the issue is, is that when I'm out on BLM I like to set up clays and shoot my pistols at a pretty long range, longer than really practical. The thing is, with my large caliber handguns, I have no problem hitting clays at these ranges. With the 22's, I get so many fliers that it's hit or miss (Literally). I don't know if it's the guns, the ammo (Always cheap bulk) or just the nature of 22lr ammo. So when the choice is between setting challenging targets and destroying them with 9mm/45 or moving the targets 10 yards closer just to be able to hit them with rimfire, the rimfires usually stay at home. Or I'll bring them out but never get around to shooting them.

I guess I was leaning toward the idea that it's the guns because I shot the same ammo out of my old 10/22 and now my Savage MK2 and have no problem with accuracy, yet the H001 consistently throws fliers. I have no problem hitting a clay target at 25 yards with a CBOB, but consistently miss the same clays at 15 yards with the 1911-22. So If I try a gun that is well known for it's accuracy, I have a feeling I'll enjoy shooting it as much as I love the bigger toys. And if nothing else, if I still miss a whole lot, at least we'll know that it's my problem, not the gun.

One last question. Does anyone know if a set of wood wrap around grips are made for the 22/45? When I see them, they are always on MKIII Hunters. Sure do look nice though.

The 22/45 is a great pistol. Accurate, dependable, and lots of aftermarket parts available. I have two and both have been 100%. The model on the roster is not the replaceable grip version.

I sent one of mine to a guy that mills the frame, installs 1911 grip bushings, and whatever 1911 style grip you like. Much better that way as the factory frame is pretty narrow.

Volquartsen makes a great trigger and sear that transforms the ok trigger into a very good to great trigger. That along with a BAM or Tandemkross bushing makes a great pistol even better.
