Ruger Takedown adjustable stock legality

Hello,

I was recently gifted a Ruger 10/22 Takedown as my first gun on my 18th birthday. I was looking at different mods and am interested in this:

My understanding is that, for rimfires, adjustable buttstocks are legal if the minimum overall length is 26".

My question has two parts: First, to the best of my knowledge, the gun can still be fired without the barrel attached; is this true? Secondly, if so, would that mean the shortest overall length would be under 26"?

I doubt that it will fire without the barrel detached, it seems like that would cause a lot of legal troubles for anyone who owns one due to the 26" length requirement. I do not own a 10/22 though so I don't have any direct knowledge of that. Its my understanding that a rimfire rifle can have all the "evil features" you want, but must be 26"+

Why? Those mods serve no real purpose other than to look "tacticool." If anything, just put some Tech-Sights on it (http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger3.htm) and maybe some action/trigger components (https://www.volquartsen.com/tags/4-a...13-ruger-10-22). Then take it out and shoot the hell out of it until you get really, really good as a marksman. In the long run, it will be far cooler to be an excellent marksman than it ever will be to have a "tactical"-looking .22. The coolest guys I know are the ones who can hit what they're aiming at -- regardless of what their guns and equipment look like.

Why modify a firearm?

1. Because we like to tinker, I'd guess 90% of calgunners have modified a gun in some way
2. Because adjustable stocks make it easier for multiple shooters to use the same firearm
3. Because Ruger doesn't make a 10/22 look like he wants it to look

I'm not a fan of tacticool, but someday I'll modify my Takedown with a similar setup for the reasons above (especially #2, my 6 and 8 year olds love shooting it, but can only do so on a bipod because of the length)

90% of Calgunners make tacticool modifications to their guns? That's surprising. What are you basing that estimate on?





Well, I guess tacticool does have a purpose. Even a tacticool 10/22. OP, it's your gun -- do whatever you want to it.

The 26" minimum can be an issue with some firearms.

I own the Henry U.S. Survival Rifle.

It consists of a screw on barrel, a receiver, and a screw on stock.

It must be put together and taken apart in a specific sequence of it will be an illegal weapon.

When assembling, the receiver must first be screwed onto the stock, and then the barrel must be screwed onto the receiver.

When disassembling, the barrel must be removed, then the stock.

The barrel, when attached only to the receiver, creates a functional firearm that is well under the 26" mimimum.
