Rem. model 41 Smooth bore. ????

Can someone tell the purpose or what the smooth bore is good for. Can this be accurate at all with no rifling? Just noticed this today, had this for years and never shot it or when I clean it never really looked at the bore til today. Any help here would be nice. thanks in advance.

Is the barrel marked ".22lr shotshell only"? If so, it is probably a Routledge barreled gun. I now own Gene Autry's old Rem 121 Roughtledge. They were used to shoot an indoor "trap" type of game called Routledge. They were designed to shoot the crimped brass shotshells but will shoot CCIs too.

Of course, it is still a viable "garden gun", novelty and collectible. It is not designed to shoot anything other than shotshells.

In the '80s, Marlin came out with a .22mag smoothbore bolt action garden gun and advertised it as such.

I'd be interested in seeing pictures of it and, if you ever want to part with it, I might be interested in acquiring it.

It is marked .22 short long and long rifle. The barrel and receiver are all on piece. I am going to sell off as I need room in the safe.

Then it is not a smoothbore. It has or had rifling. It could be completely leaded up. Does the muzzle pass the bullet test? If not, it needs a new barrel. If it does pass the test, it's probably so leaded up that you just can't see the rifling. In either case, I would not consider it safe to shoot until the issue was resolved by cleaning or replacing the barrel.

It is marked smoothbore on the receiver in front of the breech. It is a smoothbore and it is bright, shiny and clean.

A loosely related side note, I have an old Remington 521 that has a really shot out bore. I find immediately after I scrub it clean the rifle throws 6" groups at 25 meters. After a hundred rounds go down the tube, it gets leaded enough and will shoot quarter sized groups at 50 meters. I just don't clean the bore much anymore. This may or may not apply to your rifle.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

Interesting. Disregard my last post then.

Any idea of the value of these ? I cant find a 41 smooth bore to compare it to. Not looking for the top dollar , just a ballpark. In the near future I have about 10 or 12 long guns to thin out and this one was considered to be parted out at first, but as a special purpose rifle it should go intact. Thanks.

I'll offer you $50 sight unseen. They seem to be going up in price every year or, at least my 121 Roughtledge is. So, I would start checking online auctions for current real sales prices. Without looking at anything, I'll take a wild guess that yours is worth between $200 and $500. But, that's nothing more than a slightly informed GUESS.

Is a smooth bore pistol legal in CA? I thought that made it a sawed-off shotgun.

It's not a S&W 41. It's a Remington model 41 "rifle". Well, long gun or shotgun would be a better way to describe it.
