S&W m&p22 10rnd mag issues

Well. S&W got back to me today (sent in the mags last week). Turns out the glued-on floor-plates ARE intentional, and (as SoCal Choppas said, above) the purpose is to prevent conversion to 12-rounders. S&W rep apparently had to ask around, and found that even most on the tech side did not know about this new "feature" of 10-round mags. It was also mentioned that this gluing was "required". Hmmm - sort of moot, but how could this be "required"? The M&P 22 shipped to CA with the single 10-round mag in the box (floor-plate not glued). So were all those sales illegal? Of course not.

Which raises the question - WTF? Why would a company damage (effectively) their own product when not required to by law? Does anyone think this rimfire section should have a sticky warning M&P 22 owners that new mags are deliberately sabotaged at the factory and are not cleanable in factory configuration? Or would that be considered poor form?

So I guess when I get the mags back it'll be time to fire up the hair dryer, get out the rubber mallet, and "fix" the brand new mags.

Surreal and idiotic. In other words, just another day in what has become of this state and this country.

Spoke with S&W just now. Customer rep was told the mags were sealed to prevent conversion to 12-rounders. I still think this was a poor decision by S&W, and not required, but that's academic.

Would welcome any detailed descriptions from those who have done so how they removed the floor-plates. Current plan when the mags return is to use a hair-dryer (per SDM44) to heat up the glue, then ..... dunno, push/tap the plate forward while using an allen wrench to depress the button (per fast318).

I think this issue deserves a warning/advisory sticky in this rimfire forum, but as few others seem to agree, guess folks will just have to stumble across this thread to benefit from the info we've developed here. I did post a comment about the mag problem on the M&P 22/roster thread here.

I tried the hair dryer. I tried the rubber hammer.

What I found works best is a thin knife between the magazine and floor plate to break the bond. Then twist a little and it pops off.

Excellent, madoka! Thanks for that. I'll probably use the hair-dryer, followed by prying with a knife, with the rubber hammer standing by ......

By the way, I mentioned to S&W customer service that they should provide consumer info in some form - the blurbs that appear on most websites selling the mags, the manual itself - advising the victims living in idiotic 10-round states that the mags, as damaged by the factory, cannot be cleaned without consumer repair. The pistols may be history in CA as of Saturday, but presumably the mags will be sought after by current owners.

By your mag out of state then make a block to prevent 12 rds from being loaded if you're that worried about it. CA wants mags, that can be converted, made permanent. Like rivets or glue. I bought two mags for my S&W 22 in Nevada then made blocks for CA. Also, if you pass through Pahrump NV there is a gun shop called Master At Arms. They always have Armscor 22lr on the shelf for .10/rd. Brick and bricks and more bricks.

Well I received the mags back from S&W, and have successfully de-sabotaged them. As a few above did, I simply forced the floor-plate off, then scraped off the residual dried glue. (putting the mag front-side down on a pad at the edge of the bench, poking in the button with a small allen wrench, and gently hammering the floor-plate downward with a rubber mallet - as inspired by fast318 - works quite well)

danstucky - good idea - if I find any mags (still want 2 more) while I'm in AZ or NV, I'll just buy/convert 12-rounders if they don't have 10-rounders.

Everywhere you turn in today's America there is silliness (or worse) imposed by The State that takes your breath away - but this idiocy of limited mags and all the ridiculous conversion/etc. ballet that surrounds them sort of stands out.

I did mention to the S&W rep - who was sympathetic - that this particular "mod" really crossed the line, as it would make the mags impossible to clean (and many people use 22 semis for rimfire matches), and thus essentially useless for a typical and important application. Worse, it was unannounced.

It would really be nice - though sort of a drop in the bucket, overall - if the Pena case goes the right way and the indefensible "roster" is eliminated. The whole thing is so absurd on its face, it's almost as if the idiots are just testing to see if the courts will lie down for anything, however unrelated to public safety (microstamping certainly looks like a final test to see if truly orwellian lawlessness can be pursued by the authoritarians without interference from the courts).

This must be something S&W recently started doing. I bought 3 mags directly from them last spring and none of them were glued, including the limiting plug.

Thanks for this post. Haven't got any extra mags but will be curisous to find out if they are "glued." I wonder if the 1 mag it came with is glued...I'll have to check now.

The one that came with mine was glued, but very lightly and easily removed.

The three I bought from 44Mag have a ton of glue in the floor plate.

Two from 44mag had a lot of glue - the one with my MP22 no glue......

Heads up, M&P22 10 round mags just became available at Brownells. And for a decent $28 price.
