    Marlin model 60 stain finish

I recently acquired one of the model 60's and the stock has been striped and left raw. Probably an unfinished project by a former owner.

Other than the one I bought, I've never seen one, so I wonder what your thoughts are on the finish stain.

I can't tell from rimfire gallery pics if it should be a pine or pecan. The stock wood looks to be oak, rifle is suppose to be from the late sixty's.

    Thoughts?

A nice deep shiny black stain where you can still see the grain would be classy.

Not likely Oak. Walnut would be my guess. I have never seen a Oak stock on a 60. Well on anything actually.

Go to the Marlin Owners forum. Someone there could tell you exactly how to do it to original if that is desired..

You will really like the 60. But you may or not have problems with the feed throat on the old one. If you do, you can upgrade the feed throat to the newer style. But give it a whirl first..

It could be walnut, it's one or the other. I can see nice grain in the wood. It's going to be a tuff choice between maple or walnut stain. Go light and bright or more to the classic dark side. It will be fun.

            Walnut or birch.
Walnut will finish nicely with little or no stain. Birch is a ***** as it doesn't take stain well and in almost all cases needs to be darkened.

That's a beautiful gun. I want to find one just like it. What scope have you mounted?

It's a cheapie that came with the gun. I couldn't even get it to zero out. I replaced it with a Bushnel rimfire scope I picked up at Walmart for I think $69.97. Now it's a tack driver @ 50yds!

I did also buy the gun at WalMart for $197.00. (Arizona: Cash & Carry)

                      Marlin model 60 stain finish

Photos of the new acquisition, model 60. Unfinished and soon to be refinished, style to be determined.

Added the target, 64 rounds from 20 yards freestanding. This gun hold 18 rounds in the tube. So fun.

                        Marlin model 60 stain finish

Well the more I work this rifle the more I like it. I went with walnut stain on the stock. Enjoy. Letting it dry fully, then assembly.

Honestly tried doing this last fall with the one Ive had since the age of 16, but the color of green stain I was using and the type didn't work out that well so it was painted with olive rattle can. Yours looks great.

                            Marlin model 60 stain finish

Finished. Final call on wood is birch. It's cheap and you can add thick stain which they did in a couple of spots. I'm done and pleased. Here it is back together.
