Well,
After thousands of rounds and years of shooting I experienced my first out of battery firing.
I was plinking away with my Marlin 795 using Federal 36 grain copper plated hollow points. About 60 rounds into the day and about the 3rd round into my magazine everything felt and sounded normal, I slowly pulled the trigger and immediately felt and heard a louder then normal "pop" and felt some debris hit my face(I'm a lefty) and a lot of thick smoke.
Not knowing what exactly happened I immediately dropped the magazine and pointed down range on the table and left the rifle stepping back.
After about 5 minutes I approached the rifle and inspected it. The action looked seated. I disassembled the rifle piece by piece and eventually got to the action, slowly pulled it back and saw a round sticking out of the chamber blown out facing the extraction side of the chamber.
I thoroughly cleaned the rifle and ran a brush and patches through the barrel to inspect for a squib.
Inspected everything after it's clean and reassembled. Fired another 40 rounds through it without issue. Not sure if there should be any further action as it seemed ok on disassembly.
I apologize for the long post just thought I'd share my experience. I'm just glad I had on safety glasses and ear plugs so it didn't have the potential to be more then a scare. No matter what plinking away casually don't get complacent and wear some glasses and ear plugs!
Here's a couple bad pictures, I'll get a few better ones tomorrow with a better camera.
