    Out of Battery .22LR

    Well,

After thousands of rounds and years of shooting I experienced my first out of battery firing.

I was plinking away with my Marlin 795 using Federal 36 grain copper plated hollow points. About 60 rounds into the day and about the 3rd round into my magazine everything felt and sounded normal, I slowly pulled the trigger and immediately felt and heard a louder then normal "pop" and felt some debris hit my face(I'm a lefty) and a lot of thick smoke.

Not knowing what exactly happened I immediately dropped the magazine and pointed down range on the table and left the rifle stepping back.

After about 5 minutes I approached the rifle and inspected it. The action looked seated. I disassembled the rifle piece by piece and eventually got to the action, slowly pulled it back and saw a round sticking out of the chamber blown out facing the extraction side of the chamber.

I thoroughly cleaned the rifle and ran a brush and patches through the barrel to inspect for a squib.

Inspected everything after it's clean and reassembled. Fired another 40 rounds through it without issue. Not sure if there should be any further action as it seemed ok on disassembly.

I apologize for the long post just thought I'd share my experience. I'm just glad I had on safety glasses and ear plugs so it didn't have the potential to be more then a scare. No matter what plinking away casually don't get complacent and wear some glasses and ear plugs!

Here's a couple bad pictures, I'll get a few better ones tomorrow with a better camera.

Glad you're ok. That would be scary.

Looks more like a bad case than a OOB.
      The gun should be fine.

If you shoot 22's long enough, you will see that. Give the gun a good cleaning and keep going. Also, always check for a squib load (bullet still in the barrel) as that is not uncommon after an out of battery discharge.

It seems this happens more now than back then.

Glad you and the gun are okay!

Besides checking for a squib, always take a look at the extractor slot next to the rear of the chamber. .22 out-of-battery discharges or blown primers can perforate the thin wall between the opening of the chamber and that very close-cut slot.

Most out of battery incidences I have had and seen are caused by simply a dirty chamber and rifle. No fault of the ammo or the rifle. In my opinion a clean rifle will generally not allow this to happen. A neglected one, it will happen often..

Ditto bad rim on the ammo. Had this happen on some Win 555 bulk.
Glad to hear no damage to you.

I was closing a bolt when that happened to me. Had those little brass parts go into my hand.

An ex-girlfriend of mine (anti-gun). ((dont beat me up too much guys, it was a long time ago and she was hot!))....anywho, she didnt like guns at all.. she wouldnt go hunting or even shooting paper with me etc.....one time we were up in the mountains and even though I knew what she would say, I asked her if she wanted to go shooting with me. To my surprise, she actually said yes this time...not sure what changed, but wasnt going to look a gift horse in the mouth...

I explained to her about how the sites worked, basic safety info, etc. We went down an old logging road and I had setup a few cans and paper plates, etc for her to shoot at. I loaded the rifle (Marlin 60), had her put on her eye and ear protection on, and we were all set. I was behind her (duh), she aimed at one of the cans, slowly pulled the trigger, gun made a weird noise like mentioned above. She just about dropped the gun, I caught it and set it down (safety was on). One of her fingers or thumbs (dont remember which) was all black from powder and bleeding a fair amount {i had to remove embedded brass shrapnel with tweezers}. She was crying from the pain and throwing up at the same time, as the whole incident made her sick. The end result was a case rupture that caused all this fun. I was given one chance with this girl, and this case rupture sealed the deal for her to maintain being an "anti" for life....

I have shot thousands and thousands of .22 ammo and still to this day have never had another case rupture....

Glad you didnt get hurt and apologize for the threadjack.

That's a great story. Karma for sure. Had you stayed together who knows how bad things may have been for the two of you.

I had basically a slamfire on my Marlin 795 near the end of an Appleseed course. It was having troubles extracting both spent and unspent casings. I let the bolt go with one in the chamber and CRACK! It had a couple of other problems that I needed to look at so I put it away and borrowed a loaner 10/22 to finish the day.

I disassembled it afterwards and cleaned everything out, seems to be fine now but I haven't tried firing it again since.
