(Before anyone goes nuts about 10 round magazines or bullet buttons, I'm a Cali-Expat living in the woods of Northern Idaho. No PRK laws were broken in the writing of this thread. Enjoy, and consider moving....)
A while back I went down the path in getting a gun I had always wanted, even though I knew better, a Tec-22. I tweaked and tweaked on it and got it running fairly reliably. But I soon got bored with it. I was cruising through the local pawn shop and ran across one of the GSG AK-47 clones on the rack and figured "What the hell, why not?" So I traded the TEC-22 and $50.00 for the GSG.
I got it home, popped it apart, scrubbed, lubed it up with frog lube and went about cleaning up the "look" of the rifle. As I bought it, it is the "Rebel" version. The GSG comes in a wood stocked version, a black polymer version and the Rebel. The Rebel comes with two connected 24 round mags, a stupid looking red handkerchief stapled to the buttstock and some wraps of white surgical tape on the foregrip and the magazines. It's kind of a retarded attempt at giving it a battlefield pick-up look. Check it out...
Yuck...The tape and the handkerchief were gone within 10 minutes of getting home. I ran out to my super secret 50 yard firing rage in the woods and proceeded to see how she'd run. I ran a couple of hundred rounds of 15 year old Federal Wally-World cheap-*** rounds through it without any FTF, jams, stovepipes or any other kind of issues. I thought to myself "Nice...". With the iron sights, it ended up being a cool little plinker with decent accuracy.
After getting home, I realized I had an idea for some optics that wouldn't cost me anything, the 4x scope I had taken off my PSL when I upgraded to an 8x posp scope. So I dug it out of my gun closet and slid it on. It fit, but wobbled. Not cool, not cool at all... The GSG comes with what looks like a standard side mount for soviet style optics, but it's made out of plastic. It's a total piece of crap. To mount anything optic-wise on this rifle will mean replacing the mount with a real AK side mount, which I did. It did required drilling and tapping new holes. The old one's do not match up...bummer. The new mount is a UTG mount I paid $12.00 for at the LGS. The scope slid on and I laser bore sighted it and figured "Now I can see what this thing can really do".
With the PSL take-off scope, shooting off the cement improvised "bench rest" at 50 yards, I was rather impressed. The group you see is 48 rounds, at 50 yards in under a minute. I'm more than happy with that. What's cool about the "fake-kay" is that it's cheap to shoot, reliable with crap ammunition, gives me lots of practice with soviet style optics and is just flat out cool. Is it as accurate as my bull barrel, mega scoped, tricked out 10/22?. Nope, but it's not bad, not bad at all. Is it a real AK?...not even close. I've got other AK's and a PSL when I'm wanting the real deal. It's a fun, cheap, accurate and totally cool plinker. Just the thing to teach the kids and the wife to shoot and get comfortable with the AK platform. This one's a keeper...

. It holds it's zero just fine. The scope was after all, designed with 7.62x54r in mind. It's, as you say...a wee bit of overkill in this application. The scope will not lock up with the standard side mount on the GSG. The side mount on this rifle is made of butter soft plastic. I haven't tried any other kind of optic on the plastic mount, but don't think they'll do any better. If it slips on, it'll wobble, I'm sure of that. You'll have to do what I did and upgrade to a real AK side mount. Mine is a UTG that I picked up from the LGS for $12.00. The GSG plastic side mount screws are NOT in the standard AK positions and require drilling and tapping to make it fit. The receiver of the GSG is metal and drills/taps fairly easily. When determining where to drill, just make sure the horizontal scope mount surface is exactly parallel to the top surface of the receiver and you won't have any problems or issues. I did use a little JB weld on the screw threads and between the side mount and the receiver, just to make sure nothing ever comes loose. This mod was cheap, easy and optimizes the accuracy of this little blaster. Plus, with the cleaned up factory BPU patina of the Rebel model, the POSP scope just flat out looks menacing and cool...
