Checked a couple of local places here is Orange County with no luck. Also checked gunbroker, but would like to purchase one locally first. Has anyone seen a 617 in the past year or so?

When I checked there was 1 left in their inventory. When I checked the roster I noticed that the 617 expires from the roster in early March, 2014 (if S&W allows it to fall off, like they are with their pistols).
So I grabbed the last one they had. Doesn't help you, but does answer your question "Has anyone seen a 617 in the past year or so?"
You may want to get on email notifications from the various on-line dealers (I normally use Lanbo's Armory, Grabagun, Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore, KYGunCo, Impact Guns, etc. Can't really get myself to use Bud's, but you may have had better luck with them). Go to each site, locate the gun you want and get signed up for "back in stock" notifications. You only have to START the DROS by the roster drop-off date to be legal, so you still have almost a month to find a new one.sigpic

BTW there is a guy up in Hollister selling his 617 as well as a bunch of speed loaders for it. It seems like he is pretty proud of the gun based on his asking price, though:

I looked for 4 months, locally, until I gave up and bit the Gunbroker bullet. Got one for $650 NIB, and another $130 for the transfer and tax. Lots of 6" barrels around, not many 4"!Comment

If I am not mistaken, I saw one at Guns Direct and another at Gun World. Both shops are in Burbank.
Give them a call.

I got mine from Bud's
I've seen them before the panic buying at bass pro as well. Haven't checked the gun counter lately but they might have em. You've got enough time to order online and have it shipped to a local FFL. With online savings plus local transfer fees, you'll come out about the same as if you found one locally, but you'll get what you want.Comment
