Need help choosing ammo and glass for new rifle

I just ordered a savage 93r17. With 22 ammo so expensive when I can get it, I figured a step up to the more accurate and longer range of 17hmr was warranted.

My intention is to make the squirrels of San Diego County fear my name and quake with dread when it is spoken.

Looking for a scope and where to buy ammo/ brand recommendations. Looking for a balanced ammo between price and quality. Looking to spend 200 to 400 max on the scope.

Have heard you can get head shots on squirrels out to 200 yards with one of these, not that I am that good. But a scope capable of this would be great. An older chuck hawks review suggested a Luepold VX II 3-9x33. but any recommendation will be considered
    Thanks

Congrats: I just did the same as you. Here's my new baby (in about 2 weeks):

I'm new to 17HMR, but the best price on ammo I've found on line so far is this stuff for $10.53 a box (and I've found other Hornady ammo to be quite good):

Lot's of folks talk favorably about the BSA Sweet 17 line of scopes, especially since they are relatively economically priced and they are designed for the 17HMR round. I had a Redfield Revenge 4-12x, so that's what I'm mounting on my rifle, using the DNZ Game Reaper 1-piece medium height mount. Oh, and I've also ordered a couple of 10 round magazines from 17HMR Magazines.com:

I took a bunch of time stressing about which rifle to get, do I get a lower priced one and build it up, etc., and then it turns out that most any rifle is relatively low cost compared to the ammo and accessories!

Have fun with your new rifle - I can't wait to get mine to the range when it comes in and I go through the 10 day.
