I picked up a Ruger American Rimfire compact on Friday and got to take it to the range today. I had read that others had received them with canted front sights and so far, 3 for 3 that I've looked at were slightly off to the right, including the one I got. I decided to try it out anyways & then decide whether or not to return it to Ruger.
I took an assortment of ammo, 4 BX1 magazines, a BX25, TI25, a BC steel lips and my last working ancient BC hot lips. The BX1's, BX25 and TI25 all worked flawlessly. The old BC hot lips fits tight but worked just fine. The BC steel lips was sensitive to the angle it sat at and would not feed if the front of the mag was a little low. I guess this one will stay with my 10/22's.
I was only at a 50 foot range so I decided to start at 25 feet to check if the front sight was canted and how much I needed to adjust the rear sight. I shot 10 rounds of each ammo from 25 feet off a sand bag and sure enough, all were to the left of the bulls eye. I had to drift the rear over about 1/16" to get the shots decently centered. I then did 10 rounds of each ammo at 25 feet again to check the new rear sight setting before moving out to 50 feet. Unfortunately, I have crappy eyesight so things get blurry real quick and seeing the target gets hard to do as the groups show. Also took a few shots at 40 feet just because I had some rounds left in the magazines.
Overall, I am very impressed with this rifle and although the canted front sight bugs me, since I was able to adjust for it with the rear, I am not going to send it back to Ruger. I shot 190 rounds and had zero problems that I attribute to the rifle. I blame the feeding problem with the BC steel lips on the magazine. Oh and the Ruger Marksman Adjustable Trigger? It's fantastic. I want to try the spring removal trick to see how light that will be.

I bought both of the standard LOP stock modules even before I bought the rifle.

After all the fun with the RAR, I put a few downrange with my MkII. Had 1 FTF with an RGB. Hey Remington, you forgot to put in the primer!!
