    S&W Model 41, 5.5" or 7"?

I've been saving up for a S&W model 41 and I'm trying to decide between the 5.5" or 7" barrels. Can anyone on here give me your feedback and opinions on which would be better. This will only be used for target shooting.

I have owned my Model 41 since 1983, and I have had both barrels. The 7" barrel has a longer sight radius, but most target shooters use a red dot sight instead of iron sights, so the extra sight radius is unnecessary. I prefer the heft, and balance of the 5" barrel.

I imagine that I'll be mounting a red dot, so maybe the better balance on the 5.5" would be the way to go.

...but that 7" sure looks nice. Ugh decisions decisions! ;-)

Buy the 5" then add a 7" barrel later, problem solved.

I have both the 5.5" and 7" versions. My 5.5 is scoped & I shoot open sights on the 7" which is often the case with Model 41 owners. If I had to choose just one gun it would be the 5.5" which you can either scope or shoot open sights. These guns are very accurate. Keep your eyes open for a good deal on a used model that has been shot very little and is in excellent condition - a nice used model will probably run between $800 to $950. Also, extra S&W barrels are hard to find lately as I've heard S&W isn't currently making them. Look for aftermarket barrels such as Clark.

Well, I've owned both---prefered the 5" heavy barrel---more weight out front seemed to make the pistol more steady while aiming. Both shot REALLY well so pick the one you want. My personal option would be to try and find a nice older used pistol---I like the sights on the older guns better than the newer ones...

                  Hey Surf1,

Are you looking at used ones? I ask because new ones fell off the CA Roster.

I'm bummed because I saved up for a new 7" model but can't order it. I was willing to wait for as long as it took to get it.

They are exempt from the roster.Find a store that knows the rules.

There is an exemption for "Olympic" pistols for target competition.S&W 41 can be ordered.

I had both but preferred the 5". So the 7" here to a member. Regret selling it so I will be replacing it with another one if I can fjnd a good deal on one.

                        Very happy with mine

I moved over to the longer distance lanes at the range thanks to this.
