    First .22LR Rifles

Hello All, So I got my Christmas day bonus last Friday and I had to find a 22LR rifle.Simply put because I do not own one at all. I had a total of 500 to blow on anything, so because all of my LGS are closed until Tuesdays I went to big5(yeah i know the DEVIL!) but they have better prices than any gun store in my area. So I got a savage rascal, and a Ruger 10/22.

So does anybody have reviews or opinions on these two guns? I really wanted a bolt 22 but rugers are 410, which is way too much.
Also I really want to know any flaws or quirks of each platform, because I am new two these but not the .22LR.

I just jailed a Ruger 2245 and 10/22 take-down I bought online. Found lots of info on several recommended fixes my just googling and ruger forum. Just a few $10. items for each but also a lot of $$ mods. Trying to figure out a scope for the 10/22 TD.....

My 10-22 digests any .22LR ammo (my Marlin is fussy) and is easy to strip & clean. Buy lots of ammo! It is addicting!

Talk about an impulse buy.. the rascal is a youth size single shot...

For a bolt action you would probably be better served with a Savage MKII or a Marlin XT-22 unless you need a youth size single shot...

I just bought a Rascal too, threw it on the Dros with 2 other long guns.
10/22s are awesome, accurate shooters! Never shot a Rascal but heard only good reviews. Great little plinker for gophers and such in my backyard with some sub sonic rounds so the neighbors don't get pissed!

10/22=Good. A bolt rifle like the Ruger American would have been my first choice with your budget, but the Ruger 10/22 would not be far behind.

The Rascal? Those are tiny little guns and are generally considered to be a youth gun or for a person of small stature.

While you wait your ten days, consider taking a Hunter Safety class or NRA Firearm Safety Class...it will be a great investment and you will meet some like minded folks.

                  No idea about the Rascal...

...but you can't go wrong with the 10/22. You'll probably wind up owning more than one. They're great out of the box but you can go just about any way you want with customizing. You can have a mega railed tacticool rifle AND a $2K+ (heavy on the + ) bull barrelled target rifle and they'll both use the same magazines.

If you wanted a bolt gun you should have stuck to it and got a good one. CZ 455 would be the best for your budget but may exceed it slightly depending on which model. The Savage Mark II would be under budget and is an excellent shooter. Both are great bolt guns for the < $500 price point.

Normally, people look for a review BEFORE they buy the gun.

You did good not buying the bolt action. For a bolt, you should do it right--save up and get an Anschutz.

Here's some info on the Rascal you might find useful...

I recently bought a Rascal. Hadn't seen any pics or descriptions of the insides on the interwebs anywhere so I thought I'd open it up for a look see... It has basically the same AccuTrigger as Savage's other rimfires; not a cheapened/miniature version... Note that unlike other AccuTrigger...

Don't start upgrading your 10/22! It becomes a money pit real quick. It was partially responsible for my divorce.

                              This.^

Don't get me wrong, 10/22s are great. I bought my first one in 1968 and I still have it. Whenever I take someone to the range who has never shot before that is the gun I take. Easy to load, easy to shoot, no recoil.

The first thing you will notice is that the triggers on the 10/22 tend to be crappy. The pull is usually fairly good but heavy. So you do or get a trigger job or a new trigger assembly. Then the thing starts shooting pretty good and you wonder: "What could I do with a target barrel?" Then you need a stock for the new barrel. Pretty soon you wonder about the bolt and the bolt handle. You see what I mean.
