Trying to give Father in Law a reccomendation

So, I was asked yesterday by my Father in Law if I had a recommendation for a 22 pistol, essentially for plinking. I gave him a quick rundown of what price ranges you could get into for what quality, everywhere from cheap S&W 22A, middle of the road with Ruger Mk3 or 22/45 and Browning Buckmark, up to expensive like the S&W 41, High Standard (many are simpler and less expensive), or Volquartsen builds. Also to note, any combat pattern pistol is basically out of the window, so no M&P-22 or 22LR conversion for a 1911.

So that being said, I think that a Ruger Mk3 or 22/45 would be about the best for him. Solid quality, right price, and if he gets one of the target models he can have a rail to mount a red dot on (he really got a kick out of that when he shot my dad's HS Victor set up for Bullseye). And if he wants there are plenty of upgrade parts for the Rugers via. Volquartsen and others.

So here's my question: Is there a better recommendation in the same price/quality point that I am overlooking because there is the big name RUGER blocking those options? Thanks for the help.

The Ruger is a good choice. I have owned several over the years and I liked them all. After I got a Browning Buckmark, I sold the last Ruger that I had. Please note, I have only owned the Ruger Mk I and Mk II pistols. I have shot a 22/44 but never owned one. I still like the Buckmark more but the Ruger will hold its value and outlast your father-in-law's grandchildren. Another thing to think about is customization options. The Ruger wins in that regard.

How old is he? Is he sick? Are you in the "will"? Then I would definitely go for the Model 41 or the Browning!!

You cannot go wrong with a on roster Ruger MKIII Target either stainless or blued.

                      Love mine!

The Ruger's the best choice. If he doesn't like Ruger remind him that Bill Ruger's been dead a long time and the company makes AR-15s now.

Hahaha, nope, we expect him to be alive and kicking for quite a while now. Luckily he's a great man, so I don't mind him sticking around.

Thanks for the confirmation on what I thought guys, Happy Holidays, and may Brown Santa bring you many "gifts" this year!

                            Why not a single six?

I have a bearcat and it's the coolest little 22 in the world. Single six would be bigger and have adjustable sights. Nothing as fun as single action revolvers.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
