Marlin Model 81 DL worn trigger?

    Howdy folks,
Just busted my new acquisition out of jail today, and she is quite pretty to look at. That is until I pull the bolt back...
Looks like it was put away in a closet a LONG time ago and just left, I'll have to refurb some of the metal and such, but I'm wondering if anybody has experienced this issue with the gun:
Once the bolt is cocked and ready to go, very little is needed to fire the rifle. In fact it can go "click" with a firm bump from the side, pulling the bolt handle down hard, or worse by putting the safety on without touching the trigger. After pulling the rifle out of the stock, it appears the safety and trigger are working fine (to my limited knowledge) when the safety is on, nothing I can do will cause the gun to fire.
Sadly the testing phase of my rifle has resulted in way too much dry firing for me to be comfortable with. Before I ruin my firing pin, does anybody have advice or experience with this kind of thing?

If the rifle is bump firing then either the trigger or sear is the problem. Perhaps someone in the past has modified one or both and caused this problem. You will probably not damage the firing pin but rather peen the edge of the chamber by dry firing, not good either. Get some #4 dry wall anchors from Lowes or Home Depot and insert into the chamber and you can dry fire without worry until you figure out what's wrong. My money is on the trigger or sear engagement surfaces either being worn or modified by a back yard gunsmith.

Thanks for the dry wall anchor tip! I'll have a closer look at the sear trigger engagement, perhaps I glossed over it too quickly.

Might just be a bad spring. Look to rimfirecentral for answers.

These are a few of the most helpful threads that I found that tell you what you can do to improve the trigger on your Marlin bolt action rifle. Once you have read through these threads you will see that most of the information comes from our RFC member, DKemper. Trigger Work - Tincody Marlin...

Its pretty comon to replace the trigger return spring with a spring from under the flint in a Bic lighter. Cutting the spring too short will give results just like you described. Id start there. DR

Thanks for the advice guys, after some deep digging my instinct was off, the trigger is in fine shape, turns out the problem is inside the bolt/firing pin assembly. Unfortunately I can't find an owners manual for this guy anywhere, so I'll have to take to a smith to have it worked on. Unless somebody has a Marlin owners manual repository someplace?
