Pretty accurate for stock, out of the box.

    Nice results, tight groups

The 597 is a tackdriver right out of the box. Go to rimfire centrtal and see the 597 forum there. You will learn everything you need to know in the stickies. They will outshoot anything semiauto in their class. Buy the volquartsen extractor right away. I left my triggers alone, they are just fine for me. I like simmons 22 mags with AOs on them, have three. I never saw the need for the heavy barrels. There are no issues with the new mags. The twin guide rods are superior to the 10/22's desdign. The key is just snug them dfwn tight and then back them off 1/8 turn, or so. I know guys with 10/22s with very expensive AM barrels and they are pissed my 597s are more accurate. The only bummer is there are no speed loaders, like the 10/22 has. Boyd's stock for 100 bones and the inserts for another 20 or so and you are very well set. There are great video on how to do swivles on the plastic stocks. American rifleman said the 597vtr outshot others in its class too. The dude says, don't listen to 597 haters.

I just got one from oak tree over the weekend. Makes me feel better now I see better reviews for it. I had a deposit for 10/22 at turners but I know I would buy upgrades for it and it will never end. I got the 16in heavy barrel. Can't wait.

I owned my 597 for nearly a year before installing the Volquartsen hammer. First time out was amazed at what a difference the VQ hammer made. The stock hammer was fine, but the VQ hammer reduced the trigger pull by more than half. It felt like a different rifle. I replaced the stock extractor when I did the VQ hammer. The rifle has been very reliable even before the modifications. Shoots tight groups and feels solid. Can't say enough good things about the 597.

What lots of us like about the 10/22's is that they have been the best selling rifle for say 60 years and there are lots of modifications available as well as accessories. When the Remington first came out it was a piece of garbage, perhaps they have improved upon the first ones. Lets see, how many rounds can the magazine hold? Ruger has larger magazines available, and they are ultra reliable, albeit not legal in California unless you bought them back when I did. Factory Ruger trigger can be tweaked to attain about a 3# pull at basically no cost (rimfire central). Right now on Gun Genie you can buy the 10/22 with the stainless barrel for like $235 and it is a no brainer for me to spend the extra $. So it is up to you all if you want to continue shopping at brick and mortar stores but for me, I don't want to pay those high prices. I would only shop at brick and mortar stores if they had something I could not get from gun genie where you can usually find a local dealer who is basically selling you a firearm for like 10% above his cost.

When I bought my 597 I bought it from the only gun store where I live. They are the last one in the city. Sure I probably paid a lot more for it but I wanted them to have my business. Since then I've returned to purchase another rifle from their. Going online is great for saving money but supporting a local gun shop where decent, hardworking people are there to happily serve you, is well worth the extra cost. I've owned the Ruger 10/22 so I am familiar with it. While it is only my opinion, to me the Remington 597 has a better feel to it and out of the box, more accurate.

No, no. Marlin 60 has sold more that the 10/22 by a factor of 2X. Not trashing the 10/22 but over 12 million Marlin 60s have been sold. The current 597 is far superior to the ones made in the past. Most problems were related to the extractor and magazines. All have been corrected.

After looking in to .22's recently I decided to go check out the feel on one of these out of curiosity. I walked out of the store with $200 less in my bank account... I didn't get the heavy barrel however. Can't wait to pick it up and take it to the range.

I bought the Black 597 heavy barrel with factory remington scope 3x9 32mm for 206.99 plus tax and dros.

Can't wait to pick it up, I have enough ammo to break it in and some.
