    loose Weaver mounts

    Hello All
I tried to something nice and picked up a new left hand Savage 93 17hmr so my wife would have something to shoot when I go to the range. The problem started when I put a new set of rings on the factory savage bases and the new ring clamps will not go tight enough and the rings will "rock" side to side.
Next thing I did was take the scope and rings off my gun, yes another savage 93 and the rings are still loose. Before I go and buy more bases has anyone seen this before and will Savage be responsible for it. I just hate to blame them for an otherwise great rifle if its not a savage problem
Thanks for any and all help and insight

    Here's your solution:

Select you savage and use your weaver mounts I have this mount for my marlin 795 and it's awesome!!

Thanks for the info on a new weaver style base
I am just a little puzzled why a new rifle would come with a scope base that was too small to use unless it just slipped past quality control at the factory

Yeah I agree with you but since these are lower end .22/.17 the QC is not at it's highest. It was the same with my marlin. The original dovetail mounts would keep sliding back no matter how tight I put them. I would be pissed if it was per say a very expensive top of the line .22/.17.

I get the explanation backwards, but it's something like "weaver mounts will fit a 1913 picatinny but a 1913 won't fit a weaver". The two styles look the same but one is a bit larger than the other. There could be a QC issue, or it may be a mismatch issue.

For mounts as long as the weavers rings are seperate (not a one pice mount) it will fit on a picatinny rail. I don't know about a picatinny rings on a weaver base. I have the DIP marlin 795 dovetail to picatinny base mount and I'm using weaver rings (not single base mount) just make sure when tightening to push the rings forward untill they stop then tighten down while pushin forward. This makes sure they don't move during recoil.

Hope that didn't confuse you more

The most confusing part for me was thinking the new rings I had just bought for this gun were not right, So I went as far as taking other scopes off other savage 93s to check the fit and they are all loose on only the newest rifle

Well at least I feel better knowing I am not the only one having issues with Savage mounts.
Next move looks to be all new bases
Thank you all for the help

                      Quick update
I made a call to savage and talked to their marketing manager and in three days I had a new matching set of stainless rings and bases and all for FREE
Thanks to all who offered advice
