Buckmark requires removal of 2 screws, hex heads of different sizes.

Once you learn the Ruger disassembly and assembly is fine. Note while its generally tool less to field strip I usually have to use a hammer and plastic punch to remove the mainspring housing. But many peoples MKs they are able to rip that part out under only hand force.

Of the choices presented, get the MK III

If you want a painless way to disassemble the MK III get a Majestic Arms Speed Strip kit.

Have a MKII and MKIII.There is a learning curve on disassembly and reassembly.Just takes practice.

I don't think you'll need to strip the buckmark much in the field. Easy enough to wipe the dirt out with the slide back.
One problem is those screws tend to come loose and cause misfires.
Something to keep an eye on. Blue locktite helps.

The good new is really both are fine choices. I have used a friends Buckmark and took it apart for cleaning. Shot well but I didn't like the screws. I have two mark III. One is no big deal to clean, the other was a real bear to take apart and re-assemble. 30 min with round file fixed that as there was a lump on the frame. I think it may shoot better after removing the pressure.

Ruger 22/45 P512MKIII pick up date 26 Nov 2013. exactly 11 months after my first Ruger purchase.

I've been a S&W/Colt/Winchester snob for 25 years- don't know whether to be amazed or appalled at 5 Rugers in 11 mos.

The secret to the Buck Mark, learned over 30 years of owning one is: Take it down the first time and get rid of the grease Browning assembles it with. Use spray dry lube like One Shot on the action, and a little TW-25 or similar on the rails and where the hammer rides the underside of the slide. Blue Loctite the screws in place, and clean the barrel only when accuracy suffers, and bore snake it or Otis it when you do. You do not need to break it down to clean the barrel. Every several hundred rounds, clean the chamber with a bent bore brush and solvent, then swab dry. Anyway, that's how mine rolls, but some like to break their guns down and clean them after every shoot. In that case, please disregard everything I just typed.

the screw issue on the buckmark is a simple fix - just run a little teflon, plumbers tape around the threads & blue locktite around the head of the screws. like this

also with the buckmark you can change the barrel, should you choose to (I did) where as the rugers require a FFL as they are part of the receiver and I am not even sure that you can get them in CA at all

also if you choose a Buckmark, whatever you do, under no circumstances click here

Thanks for that plumbers tape tip.


Also, don't dry fire the Buckmark.
I guess it can vary one to the next, but some you can damage the barrel.

Also you can easily remove the magazine disconnect if it bothers you.

I guess that I should probably answer the OPs original question. yes you need a tool to field strip the buckmark, however I have never had to do so at the range & I have 10s of thousands of rounds through mine.
that said I carry one of these in my bag should the need arise, though it more often than not get used to tighten grip screws on other pistols or adjust sights.
