    Torque Specs for Savage MKII

Can someone provide torque specs for a Savage MKII with DIP bottom metal in a Boyd's wooden stock? Is it still 15in lbs?

Also, anyone know what the scope base should be torqued to?

My MKII seems to like 16 in/lbs on both hold down bolts, I have the heavy bottom plate. I have an after market scope base, torqued to 15 in/lbs and used blue locktite.

The parts arrived today and I see that on the included info they recommend 8-10in lbs for their 25 moa scope base. There was no mention of torque specs for the other parts, however.

Is loc-tite also recommended for the action bolts?

I use purple loctite for most of my stuff. It will keep your screws from backing out and wont damage the fragile aluminum threads that many parts have. The purple stuff can be re torqued a few times as well which makes it easier to test different torque settings at the range.

You will probably want to play with your toque numbers on both the front and rear action screw. Even an extra inch pound or two can really tighten up groups in a Savage MKII.

You should experiment with the torque setting first. As I stated earlier, my Savage likes 16 in/lbs on both action bolts. However you may find that yours likes a different torque setting or even different torque settings for the front and the rear. I have read where one guy found his MKII liked 12 in/lbs on the rear and 16 in/lbs on the front. It takes a little time and testing to figure it out but well worth it in the end. Be sure to use the same ammo for all the testing.

Start at 12 in/lbs on both, shoot a 5 shot group, go to 14 in/lbs and shoot another group. Continue with +2 in/lbs until you see the group tighten up, keep going until you see the group open up again. Set the torque at the point where you had the tightest group. Once you find the sweet spot then use the loc-tite on the action bolts.

One more note, When shooting for groups (assuming you are using a scope), use a small bullseye and zero 1" above the bull so that when you shoot you won't blow out your point of aim. I use a 1/4" dot @ 50yds using a 16x scope.
